Mortal Kombat 2 is on track to double the opening weekend of the first movie at the box office when it hits the big screen in two weeks.
The sequel is predicted to make between $40 million and $50 million at the US box office when it opens on May 8 (via Deadline).
The first movie’s opening weekend brought in $23.2 million back in 2021, which is still fairly impressive considering it also had a day-and-date release on HBO Max as part of Warner Bros. COVID release strategy. The movie went on to make $84.4 million worldwide against a $55 million budget (it wasn’t quite as well-received by critics, though, and holds a score of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes)..

Simon McQuoid is back in the director’s chair for round two, with Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada returning to the cast list.
They’re joined by some new faces, too: Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. “Especially when I first read the script, it felt very much like the intertwining of two worlds. You have Earthrealm and then you have Edenia and Outworld,” Rudolph said of the movie last year. “Kitana’s storyline feels very much interwoven into Johnny Cage’s story, and they go in and out of each other throughout the movie.”
