There are core, fundamental elements that make up an MMO. Sprawling worlds. Daily and weekly quests. Raids and dungeons. Shenanigans with your pals. All of these combine to create a successful massively multiplayer experience, but in recent years, it feels like housing has also become a core component of the genre. With humble beginnings in Ultima Online, for me Final Fantasy 14 really brought the system back into the limelight. It’s an integral part of the game’s tight community structure, and I fully believe that it’s one of the primary reasons Square Enix’s long-running multiplayer adventure is so beloved. It’s…

What does it mean to be human? Replaced asks that question through Reach, a machine whose consciousness has somehow been transferred into its creator’s body. Reach speaks aloud to Warren as he gets his bearings in the new body, addressing his host as if still inside a computer. Whether that’s because he’s lonely or simply used to it, I’m not sure. But Reach’s hunt to restore Warren’s consciousness leaves me feeling oddly philosophical.Set in a neon dystopia where human body parts have market value, Replaced takes us beyond the walls of Phoenix-City to explore the lives of the Disposals –…

Last year I covered the demo for Void War, robotically describing it as FTL meets Warhammer 40,000, because that is what it is, and sometimes, you have to call a Spade Marine a Spade Marine (I did enjoy the demo, as flagrantly combinatory as the game may be). Void War’s art direction has apparently proven a little too familiar in places for Games Workshop’s liking. Developers Tundra Interactive report that the Warhammer publisher issued a Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notice earlier this year, which led to their game being temporarily removed from Steam. Initially, it was thought that the…

Late last year, horror game Horses was denied a release on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Both Valve and Epic judged that Santa Ragione’s surreal work violated their rules regarding adult content, while the studio have asserted the the game “uses challenging, unconventional material to encourage discussion” rather than sexually titillate. Now, an interview given by one of the Epic Store’s executives has reignited the war of words between the storefront and Santa Rangione, with the latter accusing Epic of making “provably incorrect statements about the game’s content”.

Here’s a feature I didn’t know Steam needed until it revealed it: Valve has just added functionality that lets developers of games in early access to list a 1.0 release date. Early access stints can stretch pretty far these days, and while developers are often fairly reliable at sharing estimations for when those stints will end, they can often be buried in Kickstarter pages, blog posts, or the final frames of trailers. Now, a quick glance at a game’s Steam page may be all you need to find out when 1.0 is arriving. For a lot of games, the plan…
