EA CEO Andrew Wilson has hit back at the suggestion that using AI in game development is contributing to people getting laid off, claiming that the technology is simply “augmenting” existing roles rather than leading to their elimination. The use of AI in game development has been a hot topic over the past year. On one hand, companies argue that it not only removes mundane tasks from the plates of their workers, but it can also allow them to make more games and take bigger risks, as suggested by Jack Buser, Google Cloud’s Global Director of Games. For gamers,…
Monument Valley boss says it was ‘too romantic’ about giving staff ‘long-term job security’, thinks contractors are the future
The chair of the UK games industry trade body Ukie and the CEO of Monument Valley studio Ustwo Games say it’s becoming less viable for smaller studios to retain long-term employees. In an interview with Game Developer, María Sayans said the studio has been making games that cost between £7 million and £10 million, with production cycles lasting 3-4 years, noting: “We need to lower that.”The boss explained that Ustwo Games currently employs just under 30 people (down from a peak of around 40 while Monument Valley 3 was in development), before suggesting that the studio shouldn’t have hired so many…

Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has revealed that the developers cut a chapter from the game before release. In an interview with Denfaminico Gamer (translated by TheGamer) Nakanishi recalled a cut chapter from Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, saying, “Up to now, I’ve talked in interviews about how Resident Evil 7 had a ‘phantom Chapter 2’ that got cut during development. It was supposed to be the section where you move from the guest house to the main house.” He then segued to the latest entry, saying, “Actually, Resident Evil Requiem had its own ‘phantom Chapter 2’ as well.”Nakanishi explained, “As…
Why aren’t there more PC-first gamepads? Valve don’t know, but they "did see an opportunity" for the new Steam Controller
When the new Steam Controller goes on sale on May 4th, it will go up against much more established gamepads in the Xbox Wireless Controller and PS5 DualSense vein – though none that share its singular focus on being a PC gaming controller, specifically. Why are there so few PC pads? It’s a question I put to Valve designer Lawrence Yang and engineer Steve Cardinali, who’ve also worked on the Steam Deck, Steam Deck OLED, and the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR hardware. And while theories were offered, the true reasoning for the peripheral industry’s console monogamy was,…

As Garry's Mod successor quickly becomes overrun with gen-AI after launching on Steam, Garry himself commits to "taking action to promote human creativity"
The follow-up to Garry’s Mod, S&box, has been out on Steam for only a day, and there’s already some discourse going on. As with anything that involves user-generated creativity these days, AI projects are starting to appear, prompting the devs to make it clear that nothing they’ve done involves the technology.Garry Newman, creator of Garry’s Mod and founder of S&box developer Facepunch Studios, addressed the issue in a statement to Rock Paper Shotgun. “Low quality, obvious AI-created slop is going to be a growing problem in every creative outlet. We don’t encourage using AI to be creative,” he says. “We…

It’ll also be pretty cheap at $4.99/€4.99/£4.99, however, and Otherside – founded by former Looking Glass bods Paul Neurath and Warren Spector – promise that this is only “an introductory…
The Teamfight Tactics 17.2 patch notes have been revealed, and Riot Games is bringing some much-needed variety to Set 17 in its next update. Alongside the long-awaited return of encounters, five new augments have been added. The studio’s also taken a big swing at the game economy, reducing gold across the board, while lightly reworking Timebreaker so you’ll now need three units with the trait in order to generate rerolls. Emblem roulette has also been tamed, and I’ll be very glad if this stops Space Groove Riven from goomba stomping my board. We’re also seeing nerfs to overperforming units like…
