UK MPs claim GTA 6 studio Rockstar "refused to properly engage with staff" during legal wranglings over dev firings
Several UK politicians have called on Rockstar Games to be more transparent and co-operative in their legal dealings with GTA 6 developers fired last year. The staff were let go in autumn last year, with Rockstar subsequently claiming that they were fired due to the leaking of “confidential information” via a public forum, while the IWGB Game Workers Union have accused Rockstar of union busting. With legal matters between Rockstar and union over the firings currently ongoing, several UK MPs have called on the former to be more transparent and accused the company of having “refused to properly engage with…
Players have discovered a hidden easter egg in the Steam Controller which makes it scream when dropped.Early adopters of the Steam Controller have started receiving their devices, and Reddit user RF3D19 discovered that dropping it can sometimes cause it to scream.Specifically, the controller plays the Wilhelm Scream, a long-running movie in-joke where a stock sound effect of a man screaming is inserted into numerous films and TV shows. The scream was made famous for its appearance in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, and these days is used frequently.VGC has tested the theory on our controller and can confirm…
Curry Barker says Obsession 2 is possible, but he'd rather make an anthology series and "invite other filmmakers to give their spin" on wishes gone bad
Curry Barker’s long-hyped horror Obsession may have not released in theaters yet, but the YouTuber-turned-filmmaker already has big ideas on how to expand on the movie’s mythology. If you’re here, you’re presumably aware of what goes down in the movie: shy guy Bear (Michael Johnston) wishes on a retro-looking toy that his big-time crush Nikki (Inde Navarrette) loves him back. Turns out, the One Wish Willow isn’t just a novelty trinket… and Bear quickly comes to regret the flippant, morally questionable request.Early on in the flick, when Bear buys the One Wish Willow, the store clerk jokes that people who’ve been…
I was shocked by how quickly I fell in love with RoboCop: Rogue City back in late 2023. Of course, the ’80s were in vogue at the time, offering those who lived them a dollop of nostalgia, and those who missed them a taste of a time they’ll never know, but I didn’t expect an FPS game based on an almost 40-year-old sci-fi movie series. Nonetheless, this RoboCop game somehow manages to come to life as a familiar throwback, while still utilising modern mechanics and gunplay. Best of all, it and its standalone expansion are cheaper than ever right now.…
Diablo 4 lead says "there's often no ideal solution" when it comes to doing anything in the action-RPG: "Often, we just have to pick a thing"
Game development is tricky as is, but on games like Diablo 4, it can be especially tough because of the ambiguity around what approach to take. Many decisions boil down to just making a move, seeing how it lands, then adjusting based on feedback, according to one of the leads on Blizzard’s hellbound action-RPG.”We’re often faced with solving real problems, and we don’t always have the ideal solution in front of us,” Zaven Haroutunian, associate game director on Diablo 4, told IGN. “In fact, there’s often no ideal solution. Often, we just have to pick a thing.”As you may well…
"Everyone would hate you": Stardew Valley creator is "open" to adding adultery and NPC divorces, but he's against it "on a moral level"
The first thing I read this morning was a lifestyle headline about how humans simply aren’t “built” for monogamy. The second thing I read was Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone toying with the idea of introducing adultery and, by extension, divorces to cosy life sim Stardew Valley. If the third thing I read this morning is, for example, a bus advert for Paramount show Caught in the Act, I will interpret this as the universe granting permission to jump into a Portaloo with the next person who waggles their eyebrows at me.
Hot off Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyss wants to "accelerate development" on open-world Pokemon-like MMO DokeV as it aims to release a new game "every two to three years"
Crimson Desert developer Pearl Abyss is officially in pre-production for another boundless adventure DokeV, its Pokemon-esque monster catcher first announced in 2019. But, uh, forget about that last part – Pearl Abyss is hoping to redefine itself as a developer with lean release cycles after Crimson Desert took seven bloated years.Pearl Abyss confirms reports from March and explains in its new Q1 earnings letter that DokeV is officially “in development,” as is its self-described “exosuit MMO shooter” Plan 8. Both games were originally announced in 2019, as was Crimson Desert, but Pearl Abyss is suddenly fired up about “maintaining a…
Ex-Mass Effect lead isn't using AI on his new Star Wars RPG: "I'm just really unimpressed with it"
The use of AI in game development is becoming increasingly common with an apparent trajectory toward ubiquity, but that hasn’t stopped a number of high-profile developers from outright rejecting the tech in favor of 100% human-made games, and you can now count former Mass Effect series head Casey Hudson among them.Hudson left BioWare a second time in 2020 and founded the now-defunct studio Humanoid Origin the following year, and in 2025 opened Arcanaut Games, which announced a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, titled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, at last year’s Game Awards.…
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director says RPGs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 "may have been inevitable" as new players favor real-time games over turn-based
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 found commercial and critical acclaim for many reasons, but the heart of Sandfall Interactive’s French RPG is a turn-based combat system that mixes in real-time elements like parrying enemy attacks and timing combo inputs. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi reasons that such a hybrid of turn-based and action elements may have been “inevitable” as pure turn-based RPGs lost ground to action with younger, newer generations of gamers.Speaking with Game Informer in an excellent reflection on turn-based combat, Hamaguchi, who’s now helmed two massive JRPGs that largely pivoted to action combat, notes that…
