Final Fantasy 14 Evercold is the MMO's next big expansion, and it's coming early next year

The next Final Fantasy 14 expansion is called Evercold, with a release date from Square Enix for the MMO’s upcoming chapter set for January 2027.

Final Fantasy 14 director – and legend, if I do say so myself – Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has unveiled 8.0, the exciting next era of the MMO to follow Dawntrail and its own series of subsequent patches, at Fan Fest 2026 during his hotly anticipated keynote… A keynote that, according to Yoshi-P, is “probably the longest one we’ve ever done before.”

The new story – one that apparently marks the beginning of “The Godless Realms Saga” – looks like it’s going to be absolutely massive, taking all our Warriors of Light on a trip through Evercold early next year. I’m not too surprised, honestly, especially after the previous expansion’s shenanigans.

It’s no secret, after all, that Dawntrail hasn’t exactly proven to be the most popular expansion – heck, it’s sitting on Steam with “Mixed” reviews again after slowly rising back up from a “Mostly Negative” rating that it suffered from even some two years on.

Folks have yearned for a better, more gripping story, improvements to jobs – which, to be fair, Yoshi-P sort of teased a while back – quality of life changes, and, well, much more.

Warriors of Light will be visiting the reflection of The Fourth – a reflection of Hydaelyn that has fallen into ruin, slowly succumbing to the ever-spreading ice – in Evercold. Not only that, but patch 7.5, which drops next Tuesday, is setting the foundation for the new expansion. That means that, not only is 8.0 arriving in January next year, but developers are laying the roots of The Godless Realms Saga now.

Design-wise, it appears to be downright stunning, too. Unique Aetherytes, jaw-dropping city settings, dragon-adorned castles… As Yoshi-P says, “designers have put their best foot forward this time” – and I’d say that’s very apparent. “Development is in full swing,” as well.

I mean, there’s so much, “It’s hard to tell what type of world this is going to be.” Yoshi-P notes that even though the expansion is icy in name, there’s so much more to 8.0 than just wintery landscapes… and that’s obvious, judging by what he’s showcasing of the areas to come. Plus, there’s a literal “kitty town,” y’all. Step aside, Monster Hunter Wilds Palicoes.

There are various revolutionary changes, in my opinion anyway, also in the works. Take Tomestones, for example – a system I’ve dreaded for nearly a decade now myself. It’s out with 8.0, with a weekly roulette system coming, too, rather than a daily one. Yoshi-P does warn that it’s “extremely likely to change” throughout development, however.

We can expect “Seasons” as well – but, no, we don’t need to worry about pesky season passes (I’m looking at you, Fortnite). Basically, a Season is a set of two patches. So, think 7.0 and 7.1. And, gaps between patches will be less significant, making them “closer together.” Thank the Twelve.

The good news doesn’t end there, either. Item levels can be reflected come 8.0, which gives us “more freedom to choose how and what you play.” That means, should you want to join a raid on another job, you can reflect your main class’ item level onto the one you desire and then play that role instead.

Customization queens, there’s even more for us: a color picker for eye, hair, and skin tone; improved customization of eyes and lips; the addition of eye shadow; and face paint layering. Plus, we’ll get to toggle certain parts and accessories of clothing pieces on or off – no more ugly straps or overdone flowers where you don’t appreciate them.

There’ll also be a focus on “ever-evolving content” to make public fields less lonely. Square Enix will be updating existing areas with new “exciting, dynamic” content, it sounds like. And, furthermore, another difficulty level between Normal and Savage is coming to even things out a bit.

The raid changes also span even wider, with a same-region player matching system underway – and, yes, Party Finer is included! All worlds in a region will be up and open for visits and content clearing together. This is coming before 8.0, too, dropping sometime in a 7.5x patch.

Perhaps appearing as the most hotly anticipated news, though, is the coming addition of two jobs – a tank and a DPS (healers, we stay losing, I suppose). There are two job modes in the works: Reborn and Evolved, albeit only for the “main” 21 jobs (sorry, BLU stans).

Reborn mode, which is called as much “because it’s been around since A Realm Reborn,” is cool and all… but Evolved mode comes with “all new action rotations” and – let’s go – fewer inputs (but Yoshi-P stresses it’s not a “simplified” version). Both modes will have their strengths, but Evolved will be the only one available for any new jobs.

Although Evercold might not be a whole “rebirth,” as Yoshi-P himself admitted, it certainly looks as though it’ll be a turning point for the MMO – one that’s arguably needed now more than ever, as we all collectively foam at the mouth for 8.0 (okay, maybe it’s just me, I guess).

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an experience that’s just as amazing as I (and I’ll die on this hill) found Shadowbringers and Endwalker to be.

Here’s hoping Final Fantasy 14 sees a strong comeback when Evercold releases – I know that I’ll certainly be a part of it come the big 8.0 launch.

This story is in progress and still developing.
