Diablo 4's "truest test of strength" is being nerfed "significantly" so people can actually beat it

Diablo 4 often faces accusations of being a bit too on the easy side, so hearing that Blizzard is dramatically lowering the challenge of a new endgame activity posed as its toughest test yet could raise some eyebrows. Anyone who’s experienced the new Diablo 4 Bloodsoaked Sigils firsthand, however, will know exactly how far they overshot the mark, trapping some unfortunate players in a prison of nigh-impossible fights that all but bricked their character progression. Consider this change more of a kindness than a concession.

Diablo 4 Season 12 kicked off ten days ago, so players have had more than enough time to bring their characters up to the level cap and start grinding through the endgame. The Season of Slaughter is all about The Butcher – you can even play as him in short bursts – and he’s central to the newest activity. Bloodied Sigils escalate the challenge of the RPG’s Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, and Lair Bosses, elevating them an extra tier and creating what you could consider to be the equivalent of ‘Torment 5’ difficulty.

Bloodied Sigils are hard, featuring a non-stop Butcher who constantly pursues you, even returning if defeated. The payoff comes in the form of high-end ‘Bloodied items’ that scale in power with your killstreaks. If you want to go one step further, however, there are Bloodsoaked Sigils. Scaled to approximately the same level of challenge as Pit tier 100, Blizzard describes these as a challenge “for those who seek suffering and glory in equal measure… the truest test of strength.” The problem is that almost no-one can beat them, especially when factoring in the inherent extra difficulty of Lair Bosses compared to the Pit.

At first, no-one could even find Bloodsoaked Sigils, until it transpired that they only appear once you clear tier 100 of either the Pit or the Tower. Unfortunately, at this point they seem to replace Bloodied Sigils entirely, which quickly turns the celebration of pushing your character to its very limits into the realization that now everything is that hard and you can’t go back. As a rough comparison, the lower-tier Bloodied Sigils are the difficulty equivalent of Pit tier 70, which when put through Diablo 4’s stacking scaling makes Bloodsoaked Sigils a little over 200x harder. Ouch.

“We’ve received feedback that many players cannot reasonably complete Bloodsoaked Sigils after unlocking them,” Blizzard remarks in its new Diablo 4 patch notes. “By lowering the difficulty significantly, we hope to guarantee that all players who have earned access to Bloodsoaked content have a better chance of success.” It doesn’t indicate how dramatic a reduction this will be, but it’s certainly a change for the better.

This adjustment will be part of Diablo 4 patch 2.6.1, which also introduces a convenient stash and blacksmith next to Butcher vendor Kael Rills in town, something I’m still surprised wasn’t put there as standard. It also corrects an issue where Bloodied Nightmare Dungeons didn’t have the correct Obducite drop chance, leaving players frustratingly short of upgrade materials whenever they found any new gear they wanted to use. Instances of the Butcher’s attacks being invisible on low graphics settings have been fixed as well.

Diablo 4 patch 2.6.1 launches on Tuesday March 24, 2026. That means another agonizing weekend before the change rolls out. In the meantime, players have found that you can swap your Bloodsoaked and Bloodstained Sigils between the two tiers by dropping one onto a stack of the other in your inventory. Just make sure to keep some of each left to transform them back if you want.
