Apex Legends patch adds new Vortex Shields after player does 2 million damage in a single match, and I don't think that's a coincidence
Apex Legends’ Gundam event is far more fun than it has any right to be. While I would have preferred some new Titanfall lore if we’re getting mechs, the wrecked Gundam suits strewn across the game’s Broken Moon map are suitably epic, and the Buster Rifle is a fun weapon for casual modes. Just two weeks ago, popular streamer Mikkel ‘Mande’ Hestbek managed to achieve two million damage during a single match with the weapon in a private lobby filled with his subscribers. I’m not saying this may have led to the game’s new Vortex Shields, but the event’s similar…
OG God of War devs didn't expect the PS2 classic to take 4 years to make, but they "didn't know any better" and "crunched like motherf***ers"
God of War and its sequel are some of the best PS2 games ever made, but Sony’s Santa Monica Studio didn’t really know what it was getting into when development on the epic mythological action game got underway. The studio’s story was similar to many in the era: a lot of missed deadlines and intense overtime.”We started God Of War in 2001, but we didn’t start with the idea that it would ultimately take four years,” lead coder Tim Moss explains in the latest issue of Retro Gamer magazine. “We crunched like motherfuckers. We were young and enthusiastic, and we…
This week in PC games: a new Hooded Horse city-builder, some PS2-style horror, a school-day RPG and an absolutely tremendous catfish
Urgh! What’s happening? The air feels dreadfully recycled all of a sudden. Food dissatisfies, music grates, punchlines flop like stunned seagulls – everything seems somehow overfamiliar. We have entered a Lull. There are few Big Games out this week – little in the way of Big Sequels or New IPs From Triple-A Veterans or other projects that make you say “oh! That one” – and the Maw is making up the shortfall by siphoning novelty from the building blocks of reality itself. To the pumps, colleagues, before we become so jaded that our wrists and elbows lose all elasticity! There…
Screamer's racing action and storytelling are impressively unique, but the game needs balancing fast
I can only commend a racing game that tries to be different. Screamer does just that, and not just with one gimmicky feature you’ve never seen before. A racing game with an actual story is something that sounds better than it has ever proven to be in practice. JDM did it through manga pages with reasonable effect, Need For Speed games have attempted it in the past, but I’m not sure it has ever really worked. Screamer, however, dials up the focus on story. With full anime presentation and melodrama, the racing game’s action takes a back seat for a…
Crimson Desert players say they feel "misled" after learning most mounts aren't permanent: "I got this game thinking I could ride bears, raptors and dragons any time I want"
Crimson Desert is finally here, and while most people seem to be enjoying their time with the game generally, its launch hasn’t been without controversy. Developer Pearl Abyss has apologized for AI-generated assets slipping into the release build and there’s been widespread criticism of the game’s story and controls, but in terms of actual gameplay, this seems like an open world sandbox worth checking out if you’re into that sort of thing. Unfortunately, the means by which you’re meant to explore are fairly limited, and a growing chorus of players say they were “misled” by “false advertisement.”Over on Reddit, a…
I love the pulpy floral palace of Journey of the Garden Rose, a 3D action fairytale with giant insect swordfights
Get in the videogame, loser, it’s time to break into an “impossible palace”, stab insect gardeners with your saber, and rescue your mother from some bastard prince. Out today, Journey Of The Garden Rose is the latest “old school 3D action-adventure” from Renegade Sector, a developer whose affection for pulp beams forth from every pixel. Look at the blue tiles, pink pillars and sockety murals of that courtyard. Look at that grass – more like verdigris than vegetation. Look at the delightful tarantulas loitering in the low-poly orchards. Ugh, why don’t I have a palace that looks a bit like…

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke says that Butcher is "committed to being a true monster" to achieve his goals in the final season
Homelander better watch his back in The Boys season 5, as showrunner Eric Kripke says the final installment will see Billy Butcher fully embrace his villainous side.”The thing I love about Butcher’s story is it’s about how vengeance and violence, even if done for a just cause, is ultimately toxic and poisons your soul,” said Kripke in an interview with SFX Magazine.Butcher’s one aim throughout the whole series was to get revenge on Homelander for assaulting his wife, getting her pregnant, and then being responsible for her death via his super-abled son, Ryan. However, Butcher’s goals became skewed when the…
Fantasy tactics RPG Wartales is getting a "dense, reactive" capital city in the next DLC expansion, yours to save or destroy
Sordid, flesh-eating medieval tactics RPG Wartales is getting a new Fires in the Capital DLC expansion in April. It adds a wartorn metropolis to the game – Isandrin, crown jewel of Edoran and home of the Legion. As such, it’s a departure from the mucky outland gigwork you may be accustomed to, offering what Shiro game director Quentin Lapeyre calls “a dense, reactive capital, where the Chaos system ensures that every decision can impact the entire city”. As the boss murderer of a troupe of thugs, you are under no obligation to save Isandrin from escalating factional tensions. You…
Crimson Desert has got off to a shaky start. After launching to huge hype, Pearl Abyss’ latest has received mixed reviews from critics and users alike, and has had its fair share of controversy, including its “unintended” use of AI art and problems with janky controls. However, perhaps the most surprising issue of all was that it launched with a complete lack of support for Intel Arc GPUs. Now, the company has promised that it’s working on that support, but I can’t help but wonder if it has missed the boat on convincing latecomers to buy the game. For full…
