Feeling like World of Warcraft with more tension and higher stakes, this fantasy extraction "mini MMO" just hit 1.0
We’ve never really seen an actual World of Warcraft killer. We’ve seen rival MMOs come and go, with the likes of Final Fantasy 14, Old School Runescape, and Guild Wars 2 pushing their way to the front of the chasing pack, but never quite managing to topple Blizzard’s age-old goliath. But, in 2025 alone we saw various new WoW-inspired alternatives appear. Fellowship is perhaps the most prominent, followed by Eldegarde, previously known as Legacy: Steel and Sorcery. Notorious Studios’ extraction-based MMO had a lot of promise, but struggled to stick the early access landing. But that was over a year…

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and more cancelled by Ubisoft, with layoffs potentially on the horizon
Given its lengthy, troubled development period, it will probably not come as any surprise to you that Ubisoft have announced today that their Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has been cancelled. This comes as part of a broader restructure at the company, which will apparently focus on what they call five “specialised creative houses” to “reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth.” Alongside the Prince of Persia remake, Ubisoft have also cancelled development on five other games, three of them apparently being completely new, and one being a mobile title. Seven other games they have…
Battlefield 6 Season 2 sees a fan-favorite vehicle return to the fray, with a familiar map set to drop further down the line
Battlefield 6 hit a small bump in the road as it approached Season 2, and in a move that surprised a fair few of us, decided to delay the release of its sophomore content drop. The team cited “community feedback” as the reason and not much more, with a disconcertingly vague post about needing to “polish and refine” what they already had. It wasn’t a huge disaster, as the extension of Season 1 of the FPS game brought with it extra time for players to complete the Battle Pass, and a new bonus track to keep everyone busy while the…

Goofy name aside, action roguelite Lort looks like a neat fantasy alternative to Risk of Rain 2
I am going to level with you. My awareness of Lort up until this point has been non-existent. Never heard of it before today, it’s early access release day! But when you see a game called Lort, well, you at least need to take a little look. And as astronomically silly as the name is, it looks like a pretty neat, silly time, so, my predilection towards the inane has clearly worked out in my favour this time. Lort is one of those trendy affordable co-op games, specifically of the action roguelite variety. Think something along the lines…
Ubisoft axes six games, including the Prince of Persia Sands of Time remake that felt like it was finally within reach
Ubisoft has today announced a “a major organizational, operational and portfolio reset” that will see six in-development projects canceled and a further seven upcoming games delayed. The only one of the six scrapped projects to be named is the Prince of Persia Sands of Time remake, which has had a long and arduous development at the hands of multiple studios but looked set to launch within the next few months. “Ubisoft’s strategic decision to undertake this major reset is driven by the continued shift toward a persistently more selective triple-A market and an increasingly competitive shooter landscape, combined with the…
Epic Games VFX head says Pirates of the Caribbean artists would have loved using UE: ‘And I should know, I was one of them’
A visual effects developer at Epic Games has challenged director Gore Verbinski’s comments about Unreal Engine.Earlier today VGC reported that the Pirates of the Caribbean director criticised the increasing use of Unreal Engine in film production, saying it’s led to “this sort of gaming aesthetic entering the world of cinema”.“I just don’t think it takes light the same way,” Verbinksi said. “I don’t think it fundamentally reacts to subsurface, scattering, and how light hits skin and reflects in the same way. So that’s how you get this uncanny valley when you come to creature animation, a lot of in-betweening is…
