Fable head says "we can't try to make a Lionhead game," and the RPG reboot isn't fantasy either: "We all know what fantasy is – it's The Witcher, it's Skyrim, it's Lord of the Rings"
Ralph Fulton, Playground Games general manager and game director on the new Fable, is drawing a distinct line between what his reboot of the classic RPG series is and isn’t.For one, it’s not a Lionhead game. The OG Fable developer shut down in 2016, and Playground isn’t trying to simply dupe the recipe for that studio’s special sauce. In an interview with Xbox Wire, Fulton revealed that Playground received a “treasure trove of documents from Lionhead that had been in storage” to serve as a navigating star as the new developers worked on rebooting the franchise. However, Fulton also made clear,…
VPNs are now banned in the Indian region of Kashmir. The Indian government has taken this stance due to “threats to national security,” but, ultimately, as with all instances of VPN restrictions, this just feels extremely heavy-handed to me. To take the principle to absurd levels, it’d be like banning clothes just because some criminals might use them to disguise themselves. This VPN ban was introduced on December 29, so the people of Kashmir have now been living VPNlessly for a few weeks. There’s a long history of conflict in the region (as it lies on the oft-disputed border between…

Minecraft creative lead plays Hytale and concludes "I'd rather just play Minecraft," and Hytale's lead says "he is probably right to feel this way"
With Hytale entering the sandbox game pantheon, Minecraft and Mojang CCO Jens Bergensten has been poking his head in to see what all the fuss is about. His verdict on the early access version of the game? “Very polished” and worth another look, but a little familiar. In a post on Bluesky, Bergensten responds to a user wondering about his thoughts on Hytale. The CCO had previously said he’s looking forward to trying the game after its surprise revival, after all.”I’d like it to be more different to Minecraft,” Bergensten begins. “It’s very polished, but the feeling I get when I…
Turnbound is a lovely plinky mixture of autobattler and inventory Tetris, where play order is decided by a cat's bum
Out now in early access, Turnbound is a turn-based autobattler about mythical heroes trapped in a haunted boardgame, where the starting player is chosen by flipping a coin bearing a picture of a cat’s anus. It’s saying a lot for Turnbound’s mellow, fairytale ambience and rich, rosy tile designs that I consider the cat’s anus a positive – a touch of whimsy, rather than just, well, that feeling you get when you’ve been flashbanged by a picture of a cat’s anus. Rare indeed are the videogames that contain a cat’s anus, and rarer still are the videogames in which…
How do you play Fluorite in Arknights Endfield? Arknights fans could be forgiven for thinking that Fluorite is Gavial from the original mobile game, but despite appearances, they’re very different on the battlefield. As a four-star operator, Fluorite will likely be one of the first units you pull from Endfield’s banners, and getting to grips with her kit will help get the most out of her in team comps. Fluorite doesn’t rank the highest on our Arknights Endfield tier list, but don’t discount her. This Handcannon-wielding Caster thrives as an off-field support, applying and triggering elemental reactions from a safe…

Forza Horizon 6 looks like the pinnacle of open-world racing games, and a vibe check from Playground sold me immediately: "It really is just about driving wherever you want and exploring"
Playground Games has made a lot of great video games in the last 16 years, but nothing as astonishingly pretty as Forza Horizon 6. The studio is presenting a vast and vertical playground, an open-world racing game that’s working to capitalize on the stunning landscapes unlocked by shifting the Horizon Festival to Japan for the very first time. Design director Torben Ellert tells me that Playground has “created its largest, most diverse and seasonal map yet” – and after getting a first look at Forza Horizon 6 in action, I believe him.”It’s also the map with the most verticality, reflecting…
"We all have strong opinions within the studio" – even Microsoft's own game developers are hesitant to use AI
Microsoft are telling the world that the sooner we all switch to using generative AI tools in our day-to-day lives, the sooner we will 10x ourselves. Yet the corporation are still only finding haphazard pick up by videogame developers, including some of their own studios. As executive producer Susan Kath tells me, the Elder Scrolls Online team haven’t yet found a part of development where they can use it. “Right now, we generally use it for things like this,” Kath says, indicating our call. “A lot of us get a lot of use out of Copilot, for meetings, for summaries,…
Remedy says there'd be "no Alan Wake 2 without Epic" after Baldur's Gate 3 dev blames EGS exclusivity for Remedy's "financial crisis"
Remedy Entertainment has leapt to the defense of Epic Games after comments from its CEO, Tim Sweeney, were criticized by Larian Studios’ director of publishing, Michael ‘Cromwelp’ Douse. Following Sweeney’s jabs at Steam and an indirect poke at head honcho Gabe Newell, there’s been a lot of discussion around why the Epic Games Store struggles to achieve the same level of users and revenue as Valve’s platform. However, Douse’s critique went one further, claiming that “Remedy seemingly went into financial crisis” after signing a publishing deal with Epic that made Alan Wake 2 an EGS exclusive. Now, the Finnish studio…
