A new Noble Legacy update is ramping up its immersive simulation systems in what developer Studio 369 calls one of its biggest overhauls to date. The medieval game has already grown from a fairly low-key start with an impressive list of upgrades, and today’s major patch is another step in that direction. It expands the potential size of your towns, enhances the variety and behavior of your population, forces you to consider factors like temperature and cleanliness, and even introduces good boys and girls that can help you to keep bandits at bay.

In a way that feels rather fitting, Noble Legacy has built on its relatively simple foundations over the course of Early Access to start racking up quite the list of features. It incorporates the city-building of Manor Lords, but with more control over construction in a manner akin to the likes of Valheim. It allows you to recruit villagers, assign them to work around the town, create production chains, and ensure local drama doesn’t get out of hand. The once-basic combat system has since been expanded with bandit raids, forcing you to think about your town’s defenses.

The more immersive ‘survival’ elements have been lacking until now, but that’s where the new Noble Legacy update comes in. Life, Death, and Industry is “a foundational step towards deeper simulation systems and quest mechanics,” Studio 369 explains, introducing a range of systems that will continue to grow over time. Villager AI has been improved and expanded, adding more personality traits and unique dialogue based on them. Your people will now be smarter about seeking out food and medicine from the appropriate places, or heading to the tavern to relax during downtime.

Warmth and hygiene now play an active role in the health of you and your followers. That means suitable clothes and armor, along with facilities like the new bathhouse and apothecary, will be required to keep everyone in good standing. There are three tiers of potential afflictions ranging from minor to severe, and both illnesses and injuries will have a direct impact on people’s morale and productivity. If you’re heading out at night, you can now bring a torch to light your way through the dark.

In a near-future patch, Studio 369 says it will be introducing more intense summer weather, requiring the likes of straw hats and places to cool off. That will also introduce a bedridden state for more severe afflictions, along with the potential for villagers to actually die in some conditions. You’ll be able to employ a dedicated gravedigger to sort plots out, if the worst comes to the worst. “We had some glaring issues here, so decided to hold off on it in order to improve them,” it notes.

The population cap has been raised from 50 to 70, and that means you’ll need more ways to manage your settlement. Edicts help here, letting you implement kingdom-wide policies such as emergency rationing, work orders, or religious festivals on a temporary basis. You’re also now able to directly control production by setting resource priorities, and even place hard limits on how much should be kept in storage at once so your workers don’t waste time. Gathering stations also offer a visual preview of their effective radius so you can see exactly the area they’re able to cover.

Noble Legacy update - New production tools.

The game’s first unique ‘hero recruit’ has arrived. Hardwin the Hermit will require you to complete a specific quest before you can enlist his help, but it’ll be worth the trouble. Two new scenarios are also available, and the first implementation of a dynamic quest and event generation systems will offer more long-term tasks to fulfill. You’ll find a wider range of points of interest as you explore the map, and the ledger has been overhauled to make tracking both quests and events smoother.

Raiding bandits will now come in with a more dedicated focus of seeking out your most valuable resources and wealth, rather than chasing villagers around. Studio 369 hopes this makes for “a more strategic and less frustrating experience.” You’ll hear the town bell toll from afar when an attack arrives, helping you to respond quickly. If your enemies get the better of you, the much-requested addition of unarmed combat should give you the chance to recover from a bad situation.

You can now have dedicated town pets, with the dogs even able to assist during raids on your settlement, and there’s new animal trading to buy and sell your livestock. Buildings have been given a visual pass, especially at the early tiers. Look out for the new Wattle and Daub building set, along with Clay Roof parts. On the armor side, the chainmail and plate sets have been updated, and Norman conical helms have been introduced.

Noble Legacy update - The dog and cat pets.

While the ramp up of survival elements will be welcome for many players, there are also new alternatives if you’d prefer to take Noble Legacy in the opposite direction. There’s a new ‘custom’ game mode that allows you to tweak individual difficulty modifiers, along with a ‘creative’ mode that gives you full freedom to build without restrictions, if that’s more to your tastes.

The Noble Legacy Life, Death, and Industry update is out now, and the game is on a 30% discount until Monday April 27, so you’ll pay just $17.49 / £14.69. I’ve been impressed by the rate that Studio 369 has continued expanding what’s on offer here, and it’s starting to grow into a serious contender to genre stalwarts like Manor Lords and Medieval Dynasty.
