Xbox Game Studios is reportedly planning to release the remake Halo: Campaign Evolved this summer, but it’s concerned that the Fable reboot and Gears of War: E-Day will be outshone by GTA 6’s scheduled November 19 debut.
So what is Campaign Evolved to you, Xbox? Master Chief’s chopped liver? It’s possible – Tom Warren reports for The Verge that sources at Microsoft expect Campaign Evolved this summer, when GTA parent company Take-Two wants to begin “launch marketing” for the virulently anticipated GTA 6. Xbox isn’t preoccupied by that, but it is taking GTA 6 into consideration while scheduling Fable for the fall and Gears of War for “the second half of 2026,” according to Warren.
This news reveals a slightly more hesitant Xbox than studio head Craig Duncan let on in a January interview with GamesRadar+, where the lead said about GTA developer Rockstar, “They’re going to do what they’re going to do.”
“There’s always other games, and there’s always other things we have to consider,” Duncan told us. “We ideally want to space things out and make sure games have their own, as we like to call it, oxygen in those moments,” though he realizes “there are very few windows and there’s more and more games, and more competition for a player’s time.”
Once you take every showcase, shadowdrop, and act of God across the industry into account, it’s hard to disagree with him. “It’s always busy and there’s never really a free time to launch something,” says Duncan. And if time is unkind to what Halo Studios tells us is the “faithful and modernized remake” Campaign Evolved, then, uh, so be it?
