The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to have the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far… and we’re not surprised.
According to Variety, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is projected to open to $350 million worldwide, beating out Project Hail Mary, which opened to $140 million globally. The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened to a $171 global opening… and ended up grossing $1.3 billion overall.
Per the official logline, the new movie sees Mario and Luigi meet and befriend Yoshi as they team up with Princess Peach and Toad on an adventure that takes them through outer space and all across the galaxy. They eventually meet Rosalina, and together the group faces off against Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.

It’s written by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru) and directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. A third one is no doubt on the way, and some fans are theorizing that it might be based on Super Smash Bros (thanks to the appearance of Fox McCloud).
