I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Runescape Dragonwilds when it first launched into early access last year. Yes, it was rough around the edges, but I could already feel the RS vibes coming through strongly in Ashenfall. Fast forward to now, developer-publisher Jagex has been hard at work pumping out regular content drops, including December’s chunky Fellhollow update. Today, the studio has revealed its next new region, Dowdun Reach, and if you haven’t gone toe-to-toe with Black Knights in a hot minute, you might want to dust off your scimitar.
Runescape Dragonwilds Dowdun Reach is set to bring us to a “vast, interconnected stronghold,” described as “a twisted place of madness.” Charming. The stronghold itself is filled to the brim with secret passages, splintered factions that probably want you dead, and a light sprinkling of side quests to keep us nice and busy in the survival game. Based on the teaser trailer below, fans of the Fall are in for a treat, with rich, warm hues on full display. Of course, you shouldn’t let this fool you into a false sense of security, seeing as the stronghold itself is going to be loaded up with all sorts of nasty surprises.
Dowdun Reach is also set to expand skilling levels and gear rarity. In this latest update, all skills are having their caps raised to 99 – exactly as it should be. Of course, dinging max level without much fanfare wouldn’t be very fulfilling, which is why Jagex is, at last, cracking out the skill capes. I can’t wait to see how they materialize, and more importantly, if we’ll be able to get trimmed versions for achieving multiple 99s. The skills themselves have plenty of space to grow, and Jagex says backfilled content will be automatically unlocked as it arrives. With Fishing coming in April, the timing could not be more ideal to get your grind on.
While Fellhollow introduced Steel, Green Dragonhide, and Splitbark armor, Dowdun Reach takes your gear to the next level. Mithril is finally here, and you’ll be able to expand your arsenal with eight different weapons crafted from the stuff, alongside the Maple Shortbow and Longbow. Though Jagex’s presser doesn’t specify if we’ll be able to smith Mithril armor, we will, at least, be able to craft Blue Dragonhide armor, alongside every mage’s favorite: Mystic Robes.
Runescape Dragonwilds Dowdun Reach launches on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. You can check the game out on Steam here. Dragonwilds is currently 30% off as part of the Steam Spring Sale, so don’t miss out on a chance to save a few bucks.
Jagex has so far stuck to its Roadmap like an impling to a jar. The 2026 roadmap has a watertight content cadence, with smaller, monthly updates, such as the upcoming Fishing one, slotting neatly between these larger, quarterly patches. Following Dowdun Reach, we’re set to journey to the Umbral Sands in June, before braving the Scorned Wilderness this September. I’ve been waiting a while before dipping back into Dragonwilds to give Jagex time to cook up new content, and I feel now may be the time to do so.
