I found the Sonic the Hedgehog Switch 2 Joy-Cons of my dreams, and I'm willing to learn how to mod to make them mine

I’ve been a Sonic fan since I could walk on two legs and run pretty fast, but showing off my blue-blur fandom on the Nintendo Switch 2 hasn’t really been an option. Besides grabbing the games, the best Nintendo Switch 2 accessories aren’t exactly draped in plenty of imagery of Sonic the Hedgehog and friends like they were with the original Switch.

I was about to give up hope, which is when I stumbled on the radically cool Sonic and Shadow Switch 2 Joy-Con kits by CptnAlex Designs. These controllers ingeniously feature Sonic on the left Joy-Con and Shadow on the right Joy-Con, and that design idea feels so obvious given the hedgehog’s iconic colors that I’m surprised no one thought of it sooner. I have zero Switch 2 Joy-Con modding experience, so the $64 kit makes little sense as an investment for my handheld. But I’m willing to learn if it means getting to rep my favorite hedgehog boys.

I know not everyone is a fan of the subtle blue and red peaking out of the Switch 2 Joy-Con sticks, but they look incredible when paired with the officially licensed Sonic artwork. CptnAlex Designs has plastered Sonic and Shadow on semi-translucent, smoky black shells too, which helps give the modded pads that ‘Y2K’ appeal. It harkens back to the early 00s when transparent plastic consoles were the bees’ knees. Charmy Bee knees if you will.

That aesthetic feels so on-brand for Sonic the Hedgehog, especially when the Sega D-Direct website in Japan back in the day actually sold replacement ‘clear black’ shells for the SEGA Dreamcast. You know, that console that first introduced Sonic and Shadow to the masses in Sonic Adventure 2, a game that changed my life forever. It’s this SA2 obsession that has me willing to learn how to mod to install these on my own controllers.

Of course, I’d likely buy an extra pair in case everything goes horribly wrong. I have zero modding experience when it comes to Switch 2 controllers, and the kit doesn’t come with the tools I’d need, so I don’t suspect it’ll be easy. CptnAlex Designs does have a solution for this, as you can just buy these Sonic and Shadow designs fully assembled and good to go, without requiring you to have the tinkering expertise of Dr. Eggman.
