The multi-faceted nature of game development often means motion capture and voice artists have limited context for their scenes. As much was true for the mocap performers on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 involved in the ending, but they got a clue about the material’s heft when the director got emotional.
Maxence Cazorla, the actor who provided performance capture for Verso and Renoir in the huge RPG from Sandfall Entertainment, spoke about putting together the final scenes for Behind The Voice. “I remember, [Guillaume Broche, the game’s director] didn’t give us much information,” Cazorla recalls of the session for Verso’s final scene.

The direction he and scene partner Estelle Darnault, who played Aline, boiled down to estranged lovers who were finally reunited after a long time apart. Obviously, there’s a lot more to it, but that was all Sandfall could offer the actors in order to get them into the right headspace. They were all a bit befuddled.
“We were like, alright, what’s going on here, because we’re not saying anything,” Cazorla says, smiling. “That was very special, because after, we learned that was the ending of the game. Seeing how it affected Guillaume and how that scene was important to him, it made it special for us.”
I’ll spare you spoilers, but Renoir and Aline embrace in a way that really drives a dagger through your heart at the end of the massive adventure. Whatever other guidance Broche could’ve given, him tearing up seems like it was all the cast needed to understand the gravitas of what they were doing.
