House of the Dragon season 3 is less than a month away, and it’s set to open with an all-timer Game of Thrones episode in The Battle of the Gullet, if showrunner Ryan Condal is to be believed.Speaking the Entertainment Weekly, the House of the Dragon showrunner didn’t hold back when describing the season 3 premiere noting that, in terms of execution, it’s “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.” For an extended universe that has previously brought the likes of the Battle of the Bastards, Hardhome and The Watchers on the Wall to the screen, that’s fighting talk!Following…

Cruelty Squad is quite quietly influential. It obviously isn’t the first game to opt for visuals that look are debatably an affront to every sense you have and a few you don’t, but its surprise level of popularity has bled into the design sensibilities of other indie devs in the years following. Games like Splatter and Dungeons of Blood and Dream certainly feel like they fit into a post-Cruelty Squad world with their ocularly maximalist approach to visuals, and now Grindset T.V. will be joining them in the ranks, an “open world speedrunning first person platformer for the freaks.” …

Pour one out for our long-suffering Guardians, because Destiny 2 is officially dead. Or at least, that’s how it feels; with “active development” ending in June for the nine year-old shooter, we won’t be jetting off on any new adventures. And honestly, I’m gutted that it’s going out like this. As someone who’s been there since day one and has watched the game slowly yet steadily fall apart, it’s heartbreaking to watch. My Guardian – a dapper-looking Exo Warlock that I’ve used from day one – took their first steps back in 2014 with OG Destiny. I was there for the…

Sometimes, all it takes is a solid wireless controller to make a retro console feel pretty contemporary. That’s exactly what the Retro Fighters StrikerDC has done for my Sega Dreamcast, but after revisiting my collection for the retro console, I now realise that I should have grabbed the accessory brand’s other gamepad since my library is dominated by fighting games.Don’t get me wrong, the StrikerDC is serviceable for fighters, even if its $64.99 price tag is a bit yikes. It’s absolutely the pad you should go for if you’re revisiting 3D capters like Sonic Adventure, but if, like me, you’re…

While I’ve never really played all that much of The Sims (does maybe four hours of My Sims Kingdom from when I was 11 count?), my partner certainly has, expositing all of the surprisingly deep lore to me from time to time. Yet nothing shocks me more than hearing both the cost of expansions and the contents therewithin. What do you mean you have to hand over legal tender for bloody seasons? I’m supposed to pretend that this simulation of life exists in a post-weather world right up to the point of handing over 40 bucks? All of this to…

One of the best things about BitSummit is that you can frequently see some of Japan’s most notable developers walking around the show floor like regular punters. It’s not clear whether it’s just a cultural thing, but developers who are recognisable enough to risk being swarmed by players and fans looking for autographs and selfies were they to try walking around a Gamescom or PAX show, instead get to walk around BitSummit without being pestered. This is my fourth year at BitSummit, and in all four years I’ve seen former Sony Interactive Entertainment president and long-time indie game champion Shuhei Yoshida happily…

Jenova Chen – the designer of indie classics such as Flower and Journey – was partly inspired to begin making games in the first place after shedding a few tears over Final Fantasy 10, and who can blame him with a love story that tragic?Final Fantasy is a series stuffed with emotional moments and scenes that feel like someone’s squeezing onion juice over your eyes, but Final Fantasy 10 still features one of the strongest tearjerker endings in the entire franchise (and in all of gaming, according to Japanese gamers.) Tears generated by the game are so powerful, in fact,…

Birds, as we all know, are dinosaurs. Yet there exists a higher being above birds that answer the question “what if dinosaurs really were birds?”: dragons. I can only assume the exact same logic I’ve laid out here was used during the design process for the board game Wyrmspan, the dragon-oriented follow-up to the bird-focused strategy card game Wingspan. And now, much like Wingspan before it, Wyrmspan too is getting its own video game adaptation. “Play as an amateur dracologist discovering a world of dragons,” the game’s Steam page explains. “Excavate caves and explore your sanctuary. Entice dragons…

The Mandalorian and Grogu brings back Jonny Coyne’s mysterious Imperial warlord from his brief appearance in the Shadow Council scene in The Mandalorian season 3.That scene did not involve the titular duo, though, which means the movie is Coyne’s first time appearing opposite Din Djarin and Din Grogu. Of course, the role of Mando is shared between Brendan Wayne, Lateef Crowder, and Pedro Pascal – Pascal provides Din Djarin’s voice and face (on the rare occasions he is unmasked), while Crowder provides the stunts and action work, and Wayne provides the more every day performance in the suit.We spoke to…

All roads lead to, and sometimes return to, XCOM. In this case, it’s more of a return, as a sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters was announced this week, replacing its demonic subtitle with an equally gloriously edgy “Deathwatch.” This one’s apparently a direct sequel to Daemonhunters, now putting you in charge of the Imperium’s “most elite alien-hunters,” once again taking the form of a turn-based tactical RPG. As detailed in this handy little Steam blog post, developer Complex Games are picking up where they left off with the last entry and furthering it with “broad…
