Torchlight Infinite is a game that I can’t help but have mixed feelings about. It’ll always be mired in that aching knowledge that it’s not really the same thing as the original two entries from Runic Games that I fell in love with more than a decade ago. After a disappointing third outing, however, TI is more of a reinvention, and once I managed to put aside my qualms and sit down with it, I found there’s a lot to like. Still, the ARPG space is absolutely packed, and trying to make time for it is tough – but XD…

Fallout 3 calls back to the original CRPG Fallout in more ways than one. The box art is obviously an ode to the first game in the series, and was actually the very first piece of art created for the threequel. But even Fallout 3’s central story was thought of as a return to “those original themes” explored in Interplay’s classic, according to the game’s lead designer Emil Pagliarulo, who said he was inspired by a single map.Speaking to Edge Magazine, Pagliarulo remembered seeing “an overhead map of the Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin,” which play crucial parts in…

I’ve watched many people tackle various colony sims, from Rimworld to Oxygen Not Included, and I’m always fascinated by how differently we all play. MinMax Games, the developer behind Clanfolk, seems to understand that well, and its latest major update takes big strides to ensure everyone is catered for in a move I really appreciate. Boasting a 93% review average on Steam, it’s fair to say that Clanfolk’s player base have always been pretty happy with what it brings to the table (and the fields), but this new overhaul makes it easier to recommend than ever, especially alongside a half-price…

Could Resident Evil 5 be the next Resident Evil game after Resident Evil 9 (AKA Resident Evil Requiem)? It’s certainly possible in the world of gaming where all numbers have lost their meaning and I get a headache if they ever get too large (the numbers, Mason). After all, Resident Evil 4 remake blew me away in 2023 almost as much as the original did in 2005 and while Resident Evil Requiem carries forward ideas from that refresh, there’s every chance the ‘remake branch’ of the series will continue on.The real question, though, isn’t so much could Resident Evil 5…

Studying WW1 and WW2 in school, one of the hardest things to wrap my head around was the sheer scale. It’s something even the best war games struggle to capture. Battlefield 1 certainly sold the terrifying brutality of being among the action, but can’t easily replicate the relentless battle of attrition. Hearts of Iron 4 conveys size better, but places you above proceedings in a way that feels removed from the real heart of the soldiers fighting in a conflict where no-one’s ever a winner. Foxhole manages to land in that sweet spot, and now it’s taking the next step…

Nioh 3 is a Soulslike, but that doesn’t entirely do justice to Team Ninja’s twitchy mix of samurai and ninja combat against some truly monstrous yokai. The Nioh series (and I include the underrated Wo-Long among those), feels as much of an evolutionary branch of Ninja Gaiden as it is inspired by FromSoftware’s legendary Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. The genre is dubbed “masocore” by Team Ninja, and trades the super fast power fantasy we loved in our Ninja Gaiden 4 review for action that’s a bit more slower paced and considered. Though, barely slower. In Nioh 3 especially, the developer…

I’ve encountered all manner of enemies in my time playing games, but some really stick with you for just how unsettling they are. Monster Hunter’s Khezu, complete with its silent soundtrack. Bloodborne’s lurching, squelching Brainsuckers. That horrifying baby from Resident Evil Village. Well, Once Human just made the list with the introduction of its biomechanical Devourer, although fortunately it’s also accompanied by a couple of much more adorable (if still dangerous) foes. While Once Human doesn’t pull in the hundreds of thousands of players that it attracted during its launch peak, the free-to-play sci-fi survival game has kept a consistent…

There was a surge of news surrounding video game adaptations this week. Not only did Sophie Turner get Tomb Raider-ready as Lara Croft, but Amazon also announced their pick to become the former Ghost of Sparta, aka Kratos, in their upcoming God of War series.Former Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst has been announced to take on the live-action version of the role for the show, which is being penned by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind, Outlander). For Hurst, it’s hardly new territory, given that he already went toe-to-toe with Kratos (played by Christopher Judge in the…

If you frequent the cozy game space, there’s little chance you won’t have heard of Heartopia by now. While sandbox players have been foaming over Hytale this week, building houses brick-by-brick, the life game lovers looking for their next Stardew Valley-style fixation have been erecting homes with flat walls, swimming pools, and adorable coffee machines. And though Heartopia is crushing it on mobile, skyrocketing to the top of the app store charts and reaching over five million players, the Steam audience is struggling to take to its pastel-palette charm for some increasingly common mobile-to-PC reasons. A PC release of Heartopia…
