"The industry is trending away from crunch": Ubisoft, Naughty Dog and Remedy devs discuss the origins of overwork
LinkedIn today is a terrible den of web3+ grifters, obsolete CVs, frog-boiling pressure to buy a subscription, and scurrilous journalists hunting for leaks in job listings. But every now and then it comes good. For example, there’s a discussion underway between various senior developers, including current and former staff of Remedy, Ubisoft and Naughty Dog, about the causes of crunch, aka ruinous overwork. There’s a pervading atmosphere of former triple-A blokes warming up their soapboxes for a GDC talk down the line, and a certain amount of insider jargon about “pipelines” and so forth – somebody should…
How do you join other players in Hytale multiplayer? Survival games are nothing without the support of a burgeoning community of players working together towards a common goal, which is why it’s so important to play Hytale with other people. After all, if you’re out in the wilderness trying to find precious materials, someone needs to be at the base constructing useful buildings. First things first, yes, Hytale is in fact a multiplayer game. We aren’t quite sure where the rumor started that you could only play the game on your own, but that would be incredibly disappointing, even for…

Uncharted and Last of Us director says Zelda: Wind Waker was the main inspiration for his new game's art style, because the devs wanted the graphics to "last the test of time"
There’s a certain timelessness to The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker that can at least partly be attributed to its beautiful cel-shaded art style, and that’s exactly what former Naughty Dog director Bruce Straley aims to replicate in his upcoming indie adventure, Coven of the Chicken Foot. It’s somewhat ironic that Straley had such an influential hand in developing some of the games that really pushed the boundaries toward photorealism in previous console generations, having served as co-art director on the original 2007 Uncharted, and then having directed Uncharted 2, The Last of Us, and Uncharted 4. All of those games…
Monster Hunter Wilds' PC performance might stand to be improved by limiting DLC checks, but that's not necessarily a silver bullet
Monster Hunter Wilds has famously endured struggles when it comes to running well on PC since release. Capcom have tried relentlessly to improve that situation, with varying results. Cue today, and a Reddit scientist coming to the conclusion that overtly aggressive DLC checks might be a key factor in the game’s woes. Another modder has subsequently put out a work to combat the issue with the checks, but they reckon fixing this problem isn’t necessarily a cure-all.
The Elder Scrolls Online dev has heard your ESO Plus feedback, but it's a "tough conversation" to have right now
The Elder Scrolls Online’s new seasonal model is one of its biggest shakeups yet. By rethinking rewards, adding in a new battle pass system, and making all future (and some past) gameplay content free for all players, it aims to future-proof itself further as it strives to become a “30-year MMO.” Zenimax Online Studios has already revealed loads of details about this transformation, as well as some of the big changes that are coming in Update 49 in March and Season Zero in April. But I got the chance to dig a little deeper with executive producer Susan Kath and…

You can’t take a step on Steam this week without stumbling over a body. Step forward and you’ll trip over a cold-to-the-touch mobster with a knife in their back. Step to the left and, oh God, it’s a wizened academic clutching a poisoned apple in their rigor mortis grip. But one step to the right and you’ll find the decapitated head of a curmudgeonly mayor who had recently made enemies of everyone in their small town. Yes, it’s Steam Detective Fest and murder is in the air. Until January 19th, hundreds of developers are offering discounts and demos of their…
Marathon fully unveils all seven of its Runners, and I'll take the one with the grappling hook and loot-stealing drone, please
My excitement levels for Marathon hit rock bottom in the middle of last year, with rival extraction shooter Arc Raiders turning my head and keeping me hooked ever since its Server Slam playtest. However, after Bungie delayed the game and took extra time to cook, more recent glimpses of Marathon have renewed my interest greatly – upgraded visuals, insights into maps, and more have brought the buzz back. So too has today’s full unveiling of its lineup of Runner Shells. Not only do I spot some tasty looking abilities that tickle the Destiny 2 section of my little gamer brain,…
