Once again, the secret best Nintendo Direct announcement was purely for retro sickos like me: The Virtual Console dream isn't dead on Switch 2
It feels like Nintendo Direct presentations are squarely targeted at the sickos these days, and if you happen to be a fellow retro sicko, today’s presentation brought the goods. The highlight was the reveal of Hamster’s Console Archives line of emulated re-releases, which seem to be the one thing keeping the Virtual Console dream alive on Switch 2.For years, Japanese publisher Hamster Corporation has been putting out classic arcade titles on modern platforms under the Arcade Archives banner. The line includes hundreds of games, ranging from household names like Pac-Man and Space Invaders to much more obscure, but historically significant…
Horizon Hunters Gathering is a co-op action take on the robo dino series that borrows from Fortnite, Hades and Monster Hunter
It took them long enough, but Sony and Guerilla have finally announced that other online Horizon game (the one that isn’t an MMO), and it’s called Horizon Hunters Gathering. On the offset it sort of looks like a Monster Hunter clone gameplay wise, especially being a co-op action game, though there are some definite differences between the two. And there’s plenty of differences with the main series too, the most obvious being that radical art style change. I’m certainly for it, the Horizon games admittedly have quite nice colours but ultimately have a forgettable art direction, whereas this…
What are Valorant ranks? We’ve taken a deep dive into the Valorant ranking system to show you how it works and what the current distribution is. Looking at these figures, we can glean all kinds of information, like where you sit against the average player, as well as how much time and energy you’ve put into the FPS. Like all competitive FPS games, Valorant has a couple of different ways it measures ranking progress and the overall rating of players against each other. Each player has an overall Valorant rank, but there’s also a dedicated ‘Act rank’ for each act.…

Bethesda's much-rumored Starfield PS5 port is reportedly coming in 2 months, according to latest leak
While we wait for potential remasters of Fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas, Bethesda’s other sci-fi RPG, Starfield, appears to be on the way for the PlayStation 5. Leaked product listings show two versions of the spacefaring adventure, both apparently due to arrive in April. The report originates from Polish outlet PPE, where it’s stated a Starfield port is in the works for release on PS5 on April 7. This same outlet accurately reported when Microsoft Flight Simulator’s PS5 port would arrive, and Oblivion: Remastered physical copies, but got it wrong with a claim GTA 6, so, take it with a…
Arma 3's King of the Hill mod inspired the Battalion 1944 devs' new 100 player shooter, deploying in early access this year
Get in cover and 10/4 your sit reps, soldier! Battalion developers Bulkhead have revealed a new military sandbox shooter set to arrive in early access at some point this year. It’s called Wardogs and it’ll see matches featuring up to 100 mercenaries mercilessly murder each other in teams, with the reward being a stack of money to spend on upping the ante with their next loadout.
If Blue Prince taught us anything last year, it’s that some of the best games you’ve never played might be sweet, illustrative-style puzzlers from indie developers. If you’ve played Blue Prince and are waiting for something new to take its place, Botany Manor, one of the free Epic games for this week, is a must-try. The first thing that strikes you about Botany Manor is its incredible aesthetic. Taking place inside an English Victorian manor house, your surroundings are inspired by classic, vintage style. Think dark wood, richly colored paint, and sunlight leaking through stained-glass windows. In fact, even the achievement…

Nioh 3 devs "never considered adding difficulty settings" to the notoriously brutal Soulslike games, because "one of the best parts" is getting good
Nioh 3 director Masaki Fujita says developer Team Ninja never considered adding difficulty settings to its hardcore Soulslike games.Team Ninja is a developer that is associated with difficulty. Before Dark Souls was around, the studio’s Ninja Gaiden was the game people would use as a shorthand for “this is super hard,” so when the studio got around to making its own Souls-inspired games, they were naturally even harder. The Nioh series is one that I personally find much harder than any of FromSoftware’s proprietary Souls games, but despite that, Team Ninja seems to have a very similar approach to difficulty…
GOG "won't be making absolute statements in either direction" about their future approach to AI use
Retro PC game sellers GOG have faced criticism recently for using a piece of artwork made using AI tools to promote their store’s new year sale. The storerunners have since claimed that this banner was a work-in-progress asset which slipped through onto the store by mistake. Now, the platform’s managing director has revealed that the company are “not planning on making absolute statements in either direction” in terms of their future AI use, following the backlash.
