New Age of Empires game reportedly in development and starting from scratch with a major change, insider claims
I feel like everyone has an Age of Empires story. Mine is playing the second instalment on the library computer, alternating between the best RTS game of my childhood and the shiny action of Runescape as I waited for my parents to finish work. I still have a soft spot for the series despite not playing the third or fourth game at all. That may change, and a whole new generation of players might be introduced to the iconic warfare simulators, as reports suggest that a new game might be on the way. The information comes from prominent industry source…
Fallout narrator and Hollywood legend Ron Perlman says he joined the RPG franchise for "$40 and a sandwich," wondered "why?" after being informed there was more than one game
Legendary actor – and one of the most impressive chins in Hollywood – Ron Perlman has narrated nearly every Fallout game since the first RPG released in 1997, and he couldn’t care less. It was a decision he made when he was hungry.”They gave me $40 and a sandwich,” Perlman says about agreeing to assist Interplay with Fallout in the ’90s in a recent episode of The Joe Vulpis Podcast. “A year-and-a-half later, I get a call, ‘Hey, you remember Fallout?’ ‘No.’ ‘Well, there’s a second one.’ I go, ‘Why?'”A stunned Perlman was informed the game – which sold a…
Ubisoft once toyed with a "hidden" Assassin's Creed character creator that let you pick your ancestor from "millions"
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Unity almost had a ‘character creator’ system that would have seen you choosing an ancestor from a database of millions of people, rather than being thrust into the riding boots of Scarlet Pimple-esque nobleman Arno Dorian. The idea was broadly to give each player a unique perspective on the complexities of the French Revolution. According to former creative director Alexandre Amancio, this character creation system dates back to a time when the developers were weighing up two versions of the game, one of them far more co-op focussed. Ultimately, they rolled with a more…
Before the hype around Arc Raiders and the disappointment leading up to Marathon, Hunt: Showdown was the extraction shooter to play. Since its launch in 2018, I’ve been hunting bounties, shaking my aim all over the place because of anxiety, and then inevitably dying and finding myself back to square one. After seven years of updates and counting, it’s in a great spot and remains exhilarating to play, and you can grab it for its lowest price ever in this limited-time bundle. After a re-launch that cemented it as one of the best FPS games, it is now called Hunt:…
Stranger Things VFX director says they went through "maybe 100 looks" before settling on Vecna's final form – and some early designs appear to be Hellraiser-inspired
The Stranger Things documentary has arrived – and it’s here to remind us how much scarier Vecna could’ve looked on screen. In the documentary, VFX Art Director Michael Maher Jr. explains that the team went through “maybe 100 different looks” for Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower), including one that is pretty clearly Cenobite-inspired (specifically the Cenobite known as Chatterer, who only communicates through the clicking of his teeth) (via WhatsOnNetflix). Another design sees him wearing a cloak, which is maybe a little on the nose, given the Grim Reaper of it all (i.e. Vecna bringing about the end of everyone’s…
As we stumble into what increasingly looks like a hardware-unfriendly 2026, RAMnarök shows no signs of petering out. As tech giants continue hoarding memory chips to build their AI farms, and suppliers gleefully jack up their prices in turn, consumer-grade RAM is still laughably expensive – and SSDs, most of which also need these in-demand chips, are seeing some nasty inflation as well. I bring this up now, when storage prices began climbing back in November, because the past week has been particularly fucked, vis-à-vis the kind of SSDs you’d want in a modern games PC. Keepa, Amazon-tracking the browser…
Ubisoft reveals a hardcore Realism Mode for The Division 2, and a new version of the first game is on the cards too
The Division franchise’s tenth anniversary celebrations are almost upon us, and that would make 2026 an important, poignant year to begin with. But it seems Ubisoft is going all in for this momentous occasion. Just last week, we had the series’ executive producer, Julian Gerighty, talking about The Division 2’s upcoming Survivors mode and even commenting on the scope of The Division 3 – a game I now feel like we may see initial glimpses of this year. However, there’s even more on the way, as at the FPSDay X event in Japan, Ubi unveiled an anniversary event for The…
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director praises the RPG sicko who managed to beat the most infamous boss by taking every hit without cheesing: "I tried to do it before release and I couldn't manage it"
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive was merciful when it decided to make the game’s most infamously punishing fight, the dastardly post-game superboss Simon, an optional encounter. Still, as is their call of duty, J’RPG completionists have been willfully tangling with the Expedition Zero madman and his giant sword since launch, but apparently not many of them come out on top without resorting to cheesy tactics.Talking to GR+ sister publication Edge for its latest issue, Expedition 33 creative director Guillaume Broche said no one has managed to “break the game” in any unintended ways, but what did impress him…
This week in PC games: Hytale, Quarantine Zone, a weird Batman sim, and a fresh batch of RPGs and shooters
Happy Mawday all! This week, I’m thinking about how we can expand our bestiary of Maw manifestations. When describing the beast, we often resort to stock Lovecraftian imagery of a kaleidoscopic kerfuffle of teeth and tentacles, but the Maw’s appearances aren’t always so pulpy and cinematic. Sometimes, it just looks like a blinking cursor, or an expectant child, or a feeling of guilt about not returning a text message from an old friend. Sometimes, it looks like an audience of people who want to read about new PC games. Come, depress yourself with me as we tot up possible…
The next Cyberpunk 2077 game isn't coming anytime soon, so this Blade Runner-eqsue sci-fi adventure is now top of my wishlist
After one of the worst launches in all of gaming history, developer CD Projekt Red redeemed Cyberpunk 2077 through a series of intensive updates and a stellar piece of DLC. Now working on Cyberpunk 2, I can’t help but think it’ll be another decade before we return to Night City, killing any excitement for another instalment. I’m not sure I mind, though, as I’ve just seen the new trailer for ExeKiller, a survival action game that basically looks like a Blade Runner immersive sim. Sign me right up. While ExeKiller is filling that Cyberpunk 2077-shaped void in my personal list…
