"Completing the Game" is the radical plan for The First Descendant after 2 years, and the latest roadmap cooked up by Nexon just days after it called the game a flop
Nexon’s 2024 looter shooter The First Descendant was never truly healthy, and its 110,152 Mixed Steam reviews and slowly collapsing PC concurrent player count make that clear. Nexon can’t deny it, but to its credit, it doesn’t want to. Instead, the studio is introducing a “Completing the Game” roadmap to possibly, finally find gold in the mess it’s made.Game director Minseok Joo and community manager Jason go into detail in Korean and English, respectively, about Nexon’s plans in a Dev Talk livestream from April 2; you can watch the entire stream here. Following Nexon president and CEO Junghun Lee’s recent…
Oscar winning Sinners director Ryan Coogler is continuing his trend of bringing fan-favorite ’90s sci-fi stories into the modern era signing on to executive produce a new Animorphs show for Disney Plus through his company Proximity Media, with Bayan Wolcott serving as showrunner.Announced via Variety, Animorphs joins Coogler’s upcoming X-Files reboot as classic ’90s properties he’s now attached to as a producer. Animorphs is a bit more of a cult-classic than X-Files, but it’s still remembered with reverence by a generation of readers who grew up with the books.Created by writer KA Applegate and her husband Michael Grant, the series…
Arknights: Endfield dev says launching a new gacha RPG in a post-Genshin Impact world is tough when "some titles are so similar that players go into a game for 1 hour and they know what will happen in the next 20 hours"
New action RPG Arknights: Endfield turned heads not just because it’s a major release from Hypergryph, home of tower defense powerhouse Arknights, but also because none of these other post-Genshin Impact gacha action RPGs have tried turning themselves into Factorio yet. This mix of genres immediately stood out, and I’ll be damned, it actually works. Lead developer Ryan of Hypergryph tells me the factory and automation side of the game was something the developers just wanted to try, but it does have the added bonus of feeling different in a space crowded with similar RPGs.At GDC, I spoke to Ryan…
Japanese company says it sent half of a game's $345,000 crowdfunding campaign to the wrong people – who, uh, did not return the money
Japanese crowdfunding site Ubgoe owes game designer Jiro Ishii and independent developer Skeleton Crew Studio over half of the 55 million yen – approximately $345,000 – they raised for new visual novel Shibuya Scramble Stories. CEO Kazuo Okada says the platform kinda, sorta lost it, or something.Actually, it was a misunderstanding – Ishii says Okada told him the cash was unfortunately “mistakenly wired to a different client,” according to an Automaton translation, and now Ubgoe can’t hand over the missing $173,000 because they won’t give it back. But Okada won’t show Ishii proof of this transaction, and now Ishii and…
It only took 6 years, but Xbox's open-world zombie game State of Decay 3 is back from the dead with "a series of alpha playtests" starting in May
When State of Decay 3 was announced, the Covid-19 pandemic was in its infancy, Gary Whitta was hosting an Animal Crossing talk show, and everyone was watching Tiger King. It feels like an eternity ago, and other than a trailer in 2024, it’s the last we saw anything substantial from the project. Today, that finally changed, as the game has risen from the dead with the promise of “a series of alpha playtests” starting next month.Xbox Game Studios lead Craig Duncan said we’d be seeing more of State of Decay 3 this year, and he wasn’t lying. In a two-minute…

Indie dev sees Ubisoft fail to bring back Splinter Cell for 13 years, says fine, I'll do it myself with a "short, focused stealth" game "inspired by classic PS2-era games"
It’s been 13 years since the last mainline Splinter Cell game, 2013’s Blacklist, and although Ubisoft insists the Splinter Cell remake is still happening despite its ongoing “major reset” and downsizings, one indie developer isn’t holding his breath.Lizard State is a new stealth action game from solo developer Benjamin Rose “inspired by the classics.” Nothing in any of the game’s official press materials mentions Splinter Cell by name, but one look at the game’s reveal trailer is all you need to see to know Lizard State is a spiritual successor. No Man's Sky player creates stunning underwater city reminiscent of BioShock's own Rapture, and I'm not even sure this is the same game anymore
If you had shown me what I’m about to show you back in 2016 when I first played No Man’s Sky, I don’t think I would’ve believed it was the same game. Thanks to the base-building feature that was added shortly after launch, and more importantly continuous updates from Hello Games allowing for incredibly deep base customization, we have creations like this stunning underwater city from Reddit user Pleasant-Disaster837:“Lost Sunken City” NMS base build. from r/NoMansSkyTheGameThe build is titled “Lost Sunken City,” and it’s highly reminiscent of the main setting of BioShock, Rapture. According to Pleasant Disaster, “there’s much to…

New MMO rebuilding 2008's AdventureQuest Worlds cleverly becomes 164,000,000% funded on Kickstarter by asking for $1 and raising $1.6 million
The developers behind AdventureQuest Worlds have been talking about a modern upgrade of the Flash-based MMORPG for over a decade – you know, for about as long as Flash has been irrelevant. The game’s been locked in a custom launcher for ages now, and the devs are finally building a modern port for PC and mobile. Judging by the massive success of their Kickstarter, I’d say the audience is along for the ride.AdventureQuest Worlds: Infinity aims to rebuild the MMO in Unity, so it can be distributed on Steam, iOS, and Android. Existing accounts will transfer over, and the devs…
