Studio head behind Fable reboot and Forza Horizon says "there are lots of commonalities" between making an open-world racing game and an open-world action-RPG
Ralph Fulton, studio head at Playground Games, the developer behind the Forza Horizon series and the upcoming Fable reboot, discusses how the studio has been able to pivot seamlessly from racing games to a choices-matter RPG with 1,000 hand-crafted NPCs.If it seems strange that the studio best known for lovingly recreating cars from the real world and putting them into life-endangering courses is working on a reboot of a series best known for people having the chicken kicker reputation overtake their notoriety as the town’s savior, then you’re not alone.Fulton understands Playground Games’ pivot might seem out of left field,…
This "Batman through the eyes of NPCs" video makes me yearn for a game about being a petty criminal in Gotham
Reader, I am about to venture into that terrible ninth circle of videogame journalist cringe known as pitching your own game in an article. A while ago, I mused aloud on Xitter that a Batman game (or offbrand spiritual homage) from the perspective of people trying to commit petty crimes in Gotham City would be Interesting and/or Countercultural. You could portray Batman himself as both a lone vigilante and a pervasive environmental factor – a morbid, hallucinatory tendency of the architecture itself, gradually provoked and intensified by tiny acts of larceny and vandalism. Kind of like the Eye of…
Retailer Walmart has potentially leaked a pair of GameCube classics next in line for the Nintendo Switch Online service. As spotted by social media users, an image on Walmart’s website – captured below by VGC – shows a selection of NSO games. However, two of them are not currently announced.GameCube classics Metroid Prime 2 and Pikmin 2 are prominently included on the games roster. This could be an error on Walmart’s part, but it’s also possible it’s gone early with an official Nintendo asset.Nintendo Switch Online’s GameCube library is only available to Switch 2 users and, currently, eight titles are available. An…
One Yoshi moment in the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie teaser has fans questioning canon: "I hope someone was fired for that blunder"
The latest teaser for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features one major flaw: Yoshi swallows a Chain Chomp.”Canonically, Yoshi cannot eat a Chain Chomp,” someone on Reddit pointed out. “I hope someone was fired for that blunder.”The Chain Chomps, AKA black metal balls with sharp white teeth, are part of Bowser’s army and appear in several Yoshi games, including Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, so they’re a foe he’s familiar with. However, although Yoshi can stick out his tongue and eat many of the enemies he comes across, Chain Chomps aren’t one of them. You may like Other fans…

Assassin's Creed studio Ubisoft returns with more bad news, proposing "voluntary" layoffs that could cut up to 200 people at its France location
After a week of terrible news about Ubisoft game cancellations and delays, the company has announced it’s exploring eliminating 200 roles at its Paris headquarters through a “voluntary mutual termination agreement.”In a statement sent to GamesRadar+, Ubisoft says that this “remains a proposal” – at least for the time being. “In line with last week’s announcements on its new operating model and the acceleration of cost-reduction initiatives, Ubisoft International has initiated discussions regarding a potential Rupture Conventionnelle Collective (RCC), a collective, voluntary mutual termination agreement that could involve up to 200 positions at its headquarters in France,” it begins.”At this…
Nintendo 64 classic Banjo-Kazooie gets fanmade PC port with 60 FPS and widescreen, and the series creator has paid tribute in classic Gruntilda fashion: "Recompiled, oh my word! People just love the bear and bird!"
Banjo-Kazooie creator Steve Mayles has given a shout-out to the fan project that has recompiled the N64 classic for PC.Decompilation efforts have been a highlight of the 2020s, as a massive fan of retro games, with the native PC ports that have emerged from the efforts have made for incredible ways to re-experience classic games. Replaying Ocarina of Time via Ship of Harkinian made for a fantastic experience last year, and other projects like Sonic Unleashed Recompiled made a game that isn’t playable on PC at all (aside from really bad emulation) into the best version of the game. Banjo:…
Pokemon studio's action RPG Beast of Reincarnation is not open-world, has difficulty settings unlike Soulslikes, and combat is about parrying to tag in a dog you power up with pets
Beast of Reincarnation’s director, Kota Furushima, has released more gameplay details about the upcoming one-person, one-dog action RPG, which will be the first AAA game developed by Game Freak that’s not part of the Pokemon series. In an interview with Famitsu, translated by GamesRadar+, Furushima has given more details on the game, scheduled for release in mid-2026. His comments have helped clear up some confusion about the game’s genre.Gameplay shown during the 15-minute showcase as part of Xbox Developer Direct 2026 had people wondering if Beast of Reincarnation is a soulslike thanks to the emphasis on parrying and overall design, but…
We visited Japan’s Pokémon theme park, PokéPark Kanto, and left full of nostalgic joy (and carrying merchandise)
Last week, I had the chance to be one of the first people in the world to visit PokéPark Kanto, which will open in Japan’s Yomiuriland on February 5, 2026.Filled with hundreds of Pokémon statues, a life-sized Pokémon Center, and a 300-seat Pokémon Gym theatre, PokéPark has turned Yomiuriland from a quaint attraction on the outskirts of Tokyo, to a must-visit Pokémon pilgrimage. The expansion of the local park sits in stark contrast to the rest of the land – think attaching Star Wars land to Blackpool Pleasure Beach – but after exploring it a bit, this actually felt like a…
I won my first 2XKO match using the power of rancid vibes, and it's sold me on a game I didn't expect to care about
Despite naming my dog after a League of Legends character, its fighting game spinoff 2XKO hasn’t been on my radar. My fighting game experience is minimal, and I’ve never had the confidence to try online matches. Getting better at the genre is a noncommittal dream – sandwiched between wanting to learn the drums and speak a second language – but unlike the drums, which my partner has dissuaded me from with pleas to think of our tiny house and its thin walls, I don’t really have an excuse for not giving fighting games a better shot. It’s just scary!Which is…
