The current version of the original Final Fantasy 7 on Steam has existed since 2013, but it’s now going the way of the dodo, Square Enix has announced. “A new version” has been announced that’ll replace the current version, but details are virtually non-existent as far as what’s “new.”
In a new Steam update, Square Enix fully explained how the new Final Fantasy 7 will replace the current one and what that means for people who own the game, but stopped short of explaining what exactly is different about the new version.
Basically, the current version of Final Fantasy 7 will be unavailable for purchase on Steam once the new version launches, but anyone who already owns the old one will continue owning and being able to play it. Owners of the existing version will also automatically have the new version added to their libraries, so you’ll get to choose which one you want to play. That said, saves won’t be compatible between the different versions, so your saves on the 2013 version won’t transfer over to the new one, nor will you be able to bring your saves from the new version back to the old one.
Oh, the other thing we don’t know is when this new version is coming out. The 2013 release is still available on Steam for a discounted $4.79, and I don’t see any other versions on the storefront yet. So… there’s a new version of Final Fantasy 7 that we don’t know anything about coming but we don’t know when. Thanks for the scoop, Square.
