As is tradition, Valve has just unleashed one of its biggest Dota 2 updates in a while right on the cusp of a major tournament climax. With the group stages of ESL One Birmingham 2026 drawing to a close today, and the playoffs running this weekend, the developer has dropped the fittingly massive Dota 2 patch 7.41 right on our heads. The removal of Facets, a dramatic overhaul to Innate abilities, new hero spells, more items, extra siege creeps, and map changes abound. This is a big one, so let’s take a look at the main talking points.

The Dota 2 7.41 patch notes come out of the gate swinging: “Facets removed from the game.” That’s right, ten months after they were introduced, Facets are no more. While the ability to choose between several distinct playstyles from the start of the game was an interesting idea that added more variety and potential counterplay, the result has largely been that one of them is the dominant pick in most cases. Rather than deal with the continued balancing headache, Valve has stripped them out of the MOBA altogether.

Innates have been reworked across many heroes, and will no longer scale with the level of other abilities. In many cases, you’ll notice that some of the more popular and defining Facets have been integrated into these new-look Innates, or incorporated elsewhere into each hero’s kit. Creep wave spawns have been tweaked in the early game so that they’ll now meet each other slightly closer to the offlane tower, giving those players a bit more safety against their safe-lane opponents.

As the match progresses, the first extra siege creep will now be added five minutes earlier, on the half-hour mark, and a second will join once the clock hits 60 minutes. Tormentor and Roshan have flipped their starting spots (the former will now start in the bottom, and the latter up top). Tormentor has been made notably tankier, but with less early barrier regen and damage reflection. Its spawns are now closer to Lotus Pools, which in turn are found nearer to the offlane tower.

Almost nothing has escaped the balance team’s notice, and there are plenty more new items and skills to dig through. Lich gets Sacrifice as his new Innate ability, allowing him to instantly absorb mana by munching allied creeps while also denying them to enemies. Night Stalker can now eat creeps for health with Midnight Feast, OD can forge a damage barrier with Objurgation, and Venomancer can summon a Spawn of Aktook that bites foes to inflict them with a deadly toxin.

On the item side, Refresher Orb and Refresher Shard no longer reset the cooldowns on items. Shiva’s Guard and Bloodstone have been reworked, while Eternal Shroud is gone completely. Using Harpoon on trees will pull you to them Timbersaw-style, destroying all other foliage along your path. The newcomers include the defensive Consecrated Wraps, the supportive Essence Distiller (heal allies or put True Sight on a foe), and upgraded Ghost Scepter Crella’s Crozier.

Dota 2 patch 7.41 new neutral items -

Specialist’s Array offers bonus projectiles to ranged attackers, and it can be upgraded into Hydra’s Breath, which also applies a poisonous miasma to your targets that deals magical damage based on your victim’s max health. There are new neutral items too, including the Forager’s Kit, which turns a popular meme suggestion into reality. It allows you to harvest trees in return for three possible consumables. One buffs move speed and your primary stat, one offers Intelligence and mana, and one boosts your damage and can be eaten to heal.

Stonefeather Satchel asks you what’s heavier: a pound of feathers or a pound of rocks. Switch it to the former and you’ll move faster and can travel further with any effects that force you in a direction. Flip it over to the latter, and you instead get boosted armor and will resist the propulsion of such abilities. Other additions in the vast rundown of changes include the mana-refunding Spellslinger, and the Enchanter’s Bauble, which you can re-craft to keep increasing its effect on a chosen item. Tier-one neutral items can also be built right from the start of the game, which should ramp up the early jungling potential.

Dota 2 patch 7.41 is live now, and you can play the game for free on Steam. It’ll no doubt be a while before we fully figure out what the new meta looks like in the wake of so many changes. While I am sad to see the Facets experiment come to an end so soon, I remain impressed by Valve’s continued willingness to cut a system that it’s clearly put so much time into, once it determines it isn’t working out as the team hoped.
