When one of the world’s most iconic boardgames gets turned into a mobile idler, you can be sure the world will pay attention. Now, millions of players are enjoying the semi-automated gameplay of Monopoly Go. Roll your dice, travel along the board, pass Go, land on Chance, earn some rent. It translates. But, naturally, there are a lot of differences, so you might need some help.

You have hundreds of themed Monopoly Go boards to collect, and you spend the money you earn from rent and events to erect landmarks on each. This is the game’s equivalent of houses and hotels, as the more you build, the more little green and red buildings appear on your current board. There’s even PvP, which will come as no surprise to anyone who’s played Monopoly with the family at Christmas. There are microtransactions in the free-to-play game, but you can get by without spending a dime, especially by checking our free Monopoly Go dice links daily. If you need more information, here’s our dedicated Monopoly Go wiki guide.

    How to play Monopoly Go

Just like in the board game, you start off by choosing a token. Then roll the dice. As you roll, your token automatically moves around the board.

The tiles are all reminiscent of classic Monopoly, but some have different effects than you may be used to.

    • Go – awards you with an amount of money based on your progression
    • Jail – roll doubles to escape and earn bonus dice or pay up
    • Just visiting – no effect, unless it’s an event tile
    • Free Parking – no effect unless it’s an event tile or a Free Parking event is underway
    • Railroads – take you to a Bank Heist or Shutdown minigame
    • Chance – reveals a Chance card
    • Community Chest – Adds funds to your Community Chest reward
    • Utilities – Pay up!
    • Tax – Pay up!
    • Properties – award rent from other players

There are also new features you may spot as you travel around the board. If you land on a shield tile, for example, you refill your shields by the same value as your roll modifier (we’ll get to that). Any excess is turned into dice rolls. Pickup tiles may also be present, depending on the current event, and further your progress in that event.

Raised, glowing tiles indicate which tiles are currently event boosters. Land on any of these to boost your progress in the current ladder event. Railroads, meanwhile, propel you through tournament events.

    Dice multipliers

Tap the multiplayer button to the top right of the ‘GO’ button to choose how much you want to boost your rolls by. Increasing this number means that each single roll is more valuable, but this also runs your total dice down faster. For example, using the x10 multiplier uses ten dice at a time.

Use this modifier at the right time, though, and it can be incredibly useful, as it also boost your rewards by the same amount. Land on a Railroad and successfully complete the minigame, for example, and you’ll receive up to 1,000 times the rewards, depending on your current modifier.

While 1,000 is the highest multiplier, your current cap depends on the amount of dice you are currently holding. All the modifiers you can choose from are: 1x, 3x, 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x, 100x, 200x, 500x, 1,000x.

    Railroad minigames

Bank Heist and Shut Down minigames are triggered by landing on one of the four railroad tiles. These minigames each pit you against another online player. In Bank Heist, you have the chance to steal some of their hard-earned cash. In Shut Down, you instead destroy one of their buildings, forcing them to pay to repair it. Succeeding in both allows you to progress through the current limited-time event.

    Limited-time events

At least two of these Monopoly Go events take place at all times, taking the form of daily leaderboard events, short tournaments, solo events, or partner events. Landing on specific tiles or completing minigames rewards you with tokens that further your progression through these events, either automatically or with some interaction. In turn, you can earn dice rolls, sticker packs, tokens, shields, and more.

Mr M's Battleship, one of the Monopoly Go Islands.

    Monopoly Go islands

As you progress through Monopoly Go, you build landmarks on each island, up to five levels each, using in-game cash. When each landmark has reached its maximum level, you progress to the next island. There are hundreds of islands in Monopoly Go, ranging from real-world inspired locations, like New York and London, to fictional destinations. Each island,  or world, costs slightly more to upgrade as you progress through, with the later islands being significantly more expensive and requiring more hours to earn the cash required for all of the landmark upgrades.

    PvP

These islands are where the main PvP element is introduced. As you build your island landmarks, other players can come and knock them down – as you will do to others in the Shut Down minigame mentioned above.

Shields can prevent people destroying your buildings, meaning they earn less cash from the attack and you keep your landmark in-tact. However, you must keep your shields filled by playing or, eventually, you won’t have anything to protect you from other players.

    Bank of Monopoly

As you progress through the hundreds of Monopoly Go islands, there is a chance you may come across the Bank of Monopoly. This randomly occurring island can appear at any place on your map, and can show up more than once.

Rather than the usual island gameplay, the Bank of Monopoly island gives you free rolls around a special board. Keep rolling until you have landed on and collected seven random rewards to keep you going into your next standard island.

    Sticker albums

Sticker albums are sets of stickers with a set theme. There are 21 sets of stickers per sticker album, and each set contains nine stickers. Some of these contain gold stickers that cannot be traded unless they feature in the next Monopoly Go Golden Blitz event. Wild stickers come into play, as you can use these to earn missing stickers that you haven’t yet found in normal gameplay. Each sticker album runs for around three months before it expires and is replaced by a completely new album. Here are a few examples of the Monopoly Go sticker albums so far:

    • Marvel Go!
    • Star Wars
    • Home Suite Home
    • Role Models
    • Globe Trottin’
    • Wildlife Tales
    • Epic Myths
    • Heartfelt Holidays

How to add friends in Monopoly Go

To play with friends in Monopoly Go, you can invite from your list of the most recently interacted players in-game, or link to your Facebook account or phone book and see which of your friends are already playing Monopoly Go, as well as send invitations to those who aren’t yet.

To add friends in Monopoly Go, hit the friends menu icon and select contact list to automatically add anyone from your phone’s contact list. You can follow the same steps, but select Facebook to find your Facebook friends.

Finally, you can also select the invite link option to share a link directly with friends or family to invite them to join you in Monopoly Go. This could earn you up to 150 dice or tokes by inviting people to the game via your invite link. This will only work if you’re inviting people who don’t already play.

Monopoly Go shields, tokens, and emojis

There are multiple shields, tokens, and emojis available in Monopoly Go, some are unlocked as default, while others are awarded as part of an event or tournament. You can view your token, shield, and emoji collections in the My Showroom area, available from the main menu, and filling a shelf with four of the same type grants you even more rewards.
