Nioh 3 isn’t just an action game; it’s a fully-fledged JRPG with the lengthy runtime to prove it. Yes, the game has countless optional areas and bosses to take on, but those optional challenges don’t add to the runtime by much when you’re probably going to be taking on most of them for the precious Amrita you need to level up.

Just so you know exactly what you’re in for, in this guide, we’re breaking down how long it’ll take you to roll credits on Nioh 3, including a list of the areas and missions you’ll be undertaking. With this list, you’ll know exactly where you are in Nioh 3 and how much you have left.

Nioh 3 is a lengthy game, but most of the “optional” content will be found along the main path, or you may end up undertaking it for Amrita to level up anyway. As a result, your average Nioh 3 playthrough and a completionist playthrough won’t differ much in terms of runtime, assuming you don’t spend long periods stuck against a boss.

    • Average playthrough: 55 hours
    • Completionist playthrough: 60 hours

Once you roll credits for the first time, your original playthrough difficulty will be titled Heir’s Journey, and you’ll gain access to a new playthrough difficulty titled Shogun’s Journey. This is Nioh 3’s version of a New Game+ (or NG+) mode, and taking your high-level weapons to the early bosses is as satisfying as it sounds.

Nioh 3 has seven areas in total, but only the Warring States, Heian, and Bakumatsu areas are open worlds that you’ll be able to freely return to. The others are fairly linear stages that tend to be more story-focused and over quickly.

    1. 1622 CE – Edo
    2. 1572 CE – Warring States
    3. 1190 CE – Heian
    4. 247 CE – Antiquity
    5. 1622 CE – Return to Edo
    6. 1864 CE – Bakumatsu
    7. 1622 CE – Final Battle of Edo

Again, you’ll spend most of your time in the Warring States, Heian, and Bakumatsu eras, but these other eras are story-focused and will be cutscene-heavy, despite not staying there for long. If you do want to return to one of those areas, you can activate a Battle Scroll at a Shrine to replay previous missions, and this enables you to go back to areas to find items you may be otherwise locked out of.
