With all of the upcoming CD Projekt Red games, I wouldn’t think to expect any sort of multiplayer mobile title in The Witcher series akin to Horizon Steel Frontiers – but that’s apparently what we might get someday, if recent rumors ring true.
The supposed leaks circulating on the web stem from a new MP1st report that claims an inside source has confirmed a free-to-play, co-op action Witcher RPG is currently in development.
This could apparently be the already-known (albeit mysterious) Project Sirius, but MP1st notes the rumored game is planned for only mobile and PC platforms right now – “with no mention” of console launches.
The alleged game’s free-to-play model and standing on mobile “could mirror the scale of Horizon Steel Frontiers,” according to the report, and it will be set in the year 1230, when beloved series protagonist Geralt was still young.
We can supposedly also expect customizable Witchers in the rumored title, too, which would make it stand out quite a bit from predecessors… so honestly, I’m not sure I feel too excited about the prospect of… well, any of this.
I don’t see how a multiplayer Witcher could mesh with Andrzej Sapkowski’s already-established universe CD Projekt Red has expanded upon with its games, as so much of what makes titles like The Witcher 3 great is the immersion and the storytelling. I’m also curious about how the whole customizable Witcher thing would work, seeing as we’ve only ever played as canon protagonists – and we will continue to do so in The Witcher 4, which lets us play as Ciri.
Over on Reddit, a discussion surrounding the game rumors shows that other folks feel similarly worried. “Well… I mean, the silver lining is they aren’t forcing any multiplayer shit into their main title games, I guess,” reads one comment. “That’s something.” Another adds, “Can’t wait to not play it and see it closed in less than two years after release.” Largely, it seems fans aren’t too thrilled.
It’s hard to consider a free-to-play multiplayer game joining a series best known for its huge open-world, story-focused RPGs, after all. But I suppose that all we can do for now is keep our fingers crossed that somehow – should it be real – the rumored game is good.
