Thief: The Dark Project is getting a remaster this year from the retro revival specialists at Nightdive Studios, over 27 years since its initial release
Announced today during the PC Gaming Show, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is set to launch at some point this winter across PC, PS4 and PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2.
The new trailer has showcased our first look at gameplay, and as you’d hope, the visuals look distinctly smoother and far less blocky than they did in 1998, but still while preserving the retro charm of the original. Obviously, it remains to be seen what changes – if any – might have been made to the gameplay experience, but you’d hope that this could become a new entry point for fans who missed out on the original.
After all, if you’re not into VR games, Thief has been out of action for over 12 years now. Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow broke the series’ silence last year, and reached 77% Mostly Positive reviews on Steam, but alas, VR just isn’t for everyone. Before that, the last new Thief game (simply called Thief) came out in 2014, so it’s been a long wait.
Obviously, while a remaster might not scratch the itch for a whole new Thief game like veteran fans might have been hoping for, it’s just good news to see the series get some attention again. Regardless of whether you were into Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, having two new games within around a year of each other is a great sign for the franchise – let’s hope we can expect to see more from it in the future.
Be sure to keep up with our roundup of new games coming this year and beyond.
