Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets’s upcoming action-adventure 1666: Amsterdam just resurfaced at Summer Game Fest 2026, and it has a prologue you can play on PC right now ahead of its launch into early access this year.
1666: Amsterdam’s trailer showcases protagonist Noa and the game’s setting, which – you’re not going to believe this – is Amsterdam, set in 1666. Witchcraft is a huge element here, which is ironic given that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe is similarly rumored to be a witchy adventure – it looks like Désilets may have beaten Ubisoft to it.
For now, you can play the 30-minute prologue on both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
1666: Amsterdam has been a long time coming – when Désilets left Ubisoft and joined THQ Montreal in 2011, it was going to be his next big game, but following the company’s financial struggles, the rights ended up being sold to Ubisoft. However, Désilets was eventually able to obtain the rights – we got our first look at some art for it in 2016.
Obviously, it’s been a while since then. He reaffirmed it was happening in 2019, and in a press release today, he says that the team – made of “nearly 70 talented developers in Montreal” at Panache Digital Games – has been working hard for the “past six years” and “focused on one thing above all else: the game itself. No fake footage, no vertical slices, just a playable experience evolving build after build, day after day.”
Désilets calls the prologue demo “a small taste of what’s to come, an amuse-bouche before a nine-course dinner, an introduction to the world, its characters, and its different time periods,” so don’t expect it to be huge. With that said, it’s just cool to see the game resurface again after all this time, and seemingly with not that much longer to wait for its early access launch.
