If you were to squint and look at the new trailer for 1666: Amsterdam you might think you’re finally getting a glimpse of the next Assassin’s Creed game, codenamed Hexe. But joke’s on you: One of them is playable right now and the other is, well, still under wraps over at Ubisoft.

Seeing a game that looks suspiciously similar to the much-anticipated witchy Assassin’s Creed game has, unsurprisingly, caught people by surprise.

“We got Assassin’s Creed Hexe before Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Hexe,” joked X user TheRealZephryss. Even though there are no oaths or historical cameos (that we know of) in 1666: Amsterdam, they pointed out that its creator is one of the very minds behind the original Assassin’s Creed, Patrice Désilets. “This is going to be fantastic,” they added.

Other posters are just as confused at how similar 1666: Amsterdam looks compared to the brief descriptions we have of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, even down to having a cat companion—a thing that Ubisoft reportedly cut from its game recently.

In the absence of a proper trailer for Assassin’s Creed Hexe, some fans are swapping their attention over to 1666: Amsterdam. ” Creed Hexe WHO???” wrote Toussaint Egan on Bluesky.

Over on the Assassin’s Creed subreddit fans are still optimistic. Several people are glad to see a game going for a similar style and hope that both will be worth checking out when they’re finally out. “HOLY SHIT, TWO CAKES moment for me!” wrote one user in a thread about 1666: Amsterdam’s new trailer.

It’s worth noting that 1666: Amsterdam will be an early access game to start, which gives Ubisoft some time to fill the gap before its release with Assassin’s Creed Hexe. However, the most recent news we’ve had about the game makes it sound like the development process has been turbulent, and there’s no sign of when Ubisoft will be ready to show the game again.
