Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director says he won't pump the brakes on mini-games, including the original's Tifa slap fight, "no matter how much feedback we receive"

Despite some fan criticism directed at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s abundance of mini-games, series director Naoki Hamaguchi isn’t pumping the brakes on those fun side activities for the newly-revealed Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. In fact, he’s even remaking one of the original game’s most absurd Tifa-related mini-games.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation gave us all a good look at the trilogy’s finale last night at Summer Game Fest, but we didn’t see much of the mini-games that were littered all across our last adventure with Cloud. If you’re a fan of those, don’t worry. And if you’re a mini-game hater, buckle up!

Speaking to Automaton, Hamaguchi says requests for the team to peel back mini-games is a tough one. “I have a very clear policy that I don’t want to change, no matter how much feedback we receive,” he explains. “After all, the original FF7 had an enormous number of minigames. This remake series exists because of the original game, and respecting the original is one of our core policies.”

Slight spoilers for the original Final Fantasy 7 and Revelation below, be warned.

Hamaguchi and the team are remaining so faithful to the 1997 JRPG, in fact, that they’re even recreating one of the game’s most absurd and memed moments. You know the one. Tifa and recurring villain Scarlet finally confront each other atop of the Junon canon, but instead of going all out, the ladies simply take turns slapping each other in the face.

In a separate interview, Hamaguchi tells Denfaminico the moment didn’t leave a huge impression on him personally when he first started remaking the classic game, but after Rebirth had fans practically drooling for a modern confrontation between the two characters, the director felt he couldn’t skip over this one.

And for anyone who really doesn’t like the mini-games in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the team’s making a lot of them entirely optional. Rewards for mini-games are now, for the most part, tied to character skins and customization rather than items that’ll buff your combat capabilities, as well. There’s also apparently an Easy setting specifically for mini-game difficulty.

“The abundance of minigames is one of the original game’s defining traits, so even in a remake, that’s not something I intend to change,” Hamaguchi continues. “On the other hand, I do believe it’s crucial to make them more comfortable to play and to ensure players don’t feel disadvantaged if they choose to skip them. We’ve incorporated the lessons we learned from FFVII Rebirth into this game, so I’m looking forward to seeing how players respond to it.”
