Turning on your Marathon flashlight on Night Marsh is very important for helping you navigate the darkness, especially indoors, but it’s also a bit fiddly. With practically every button on a controller taken up in Marathon, your flashlight works using an unusual two-button input that does very briefly pop up on screen at the start of a match but is easy to miss – if you’re like me and immediately check the map when a run starts, you’ll probably miss it every time. Here’s how you turn on and off your flashlight in Marathon.
How to turn on your flashlight in Marathon
To turn on your flashlight when playing on Dire Marsh Night, you need to quickly tap D-Pad Left and Square (PS5) or D-Pad Left and X (Xbox) at the same time if you’re using a controller. If you’re using a mouse and keyboard, you just need to press B. You can repeat the input to turn the flashlight off too.
It’s a bit of an odd button input for controller and you can re-bind it in the settings menu if you’d like – just be mindful that you don’t overwrite other important controls. Open the Settings menu, then navigate to the ‘Keyboard / Mouse’ or ‘Controller’ submenu based on your own input device. Look for the ‘Toggle Flashlight’ option and adjust as necessary.
Be aware that your flashlight will obviously give you away to other players, so while turning it on will significantly improve your visibility through the dark swamps, having it activated all of the time isn’t the best idea.
Additionally, this function is also exclusive to the night version of Dire Marsh, so you don’t need to worry about trying to light the way on other Marathon maps. Instead, you can use things like Signal Flares and the other new night-vision equipment that arrived with Marathon Season 2, such as Vector Grenades and Darksight Scopes.
