The Terraria devs seem to be done promising final updates, and at this point it looks like the beloved sandbox game is going to keep getting new features until the wheels fall off. The impending 1.4.5.7 is meant to be a balance-focused patch, but every time the devs talk about it they’re promising more and more new features. What gives? Well, this balance pass is about more than tweaking the damage numbers.
“Sometimes, addressing balance means rethinking some core aspects around how things function – or expanding upon what is already there in new ways,” developer Re-Logic explains in a new State of the Game blog. A couple of teasers for upcoming features – a movable Sentry and some sort of ammo switch – are presented as a “nice representation” of what the team’s trying to accomplish.
“They are also again indicative of the scope of changes being made around the balancing goals – this is not just about adjusting a few numbers here and there,” the devs continue. “Of course, when the time comes and you all have these changes in your hands, we will be all ears to hear your feedback. Too much? Not enough? Just right? We can’t wait to see what you make of it all!”
So if you’re wondering why 1.4.5.7, ostensibly a simple hotfix, is taking so long and getting so many new features, that’ll be the prime culprit. Given how extensive this update is, however, Re-Logic has already suggested that a 1.4.5.8 will almost certainly follow to address whatever feedback the community has.
This is all coming before the long-awaited crossplay update which is, yes, still on the way. “We have been having some nice discussions around how best to roll out Crossplay (likely in phases, as shared previously) in a way that brings the functionality as quickly as possible to everyone without causing any confusion,” the developers continue. “We will share more on that as those plans coalesce, but suffice to say for now that we are trying to plan ahead for what’s next!”
Terraria recently celebrated its 15th birthday with over 70 million copies sold, and there’s still no stopping it – even if I am a little sad that I don’t get to make my “final update” jokes anymore.
