Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 developer Warhorse Studios is indeed now working on a new open-world Lord of the Rings RPG, confirming what many fans hoped to be true following reports.
I’ve been yearning for a good game set in Middle-earth for years now, with the last one I can remember playing being on the PlayStation 2 (unless we count the darling little LEGO entries in between, of course). Sadly, various projects – I’m looking at you, Amazon – have popped up only to then face cancellation, leaving us Tolkien stans with naught.
Well, thankfully, an RPG icon of a studio has swooped in to save the day.
Warhorse Studios, the creative team behind genre gems like Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel, previously revealed that it was making an “immersive RPG rich with details” that’s “hopefully not so buggy” – but it didn’t confirm (or deny) whether this was a Lord of the Rings-shaped project.
Now, the studio has done just that… in an online post, of all things. “You might have heard the rumors, it’s time to reveal what we are working on,” it writes.

“An open world Middle-earth RPG. A new Kingdom Come adventure. We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.” Yep, it’s real – and so is a new Kingdom Come game, I guess (but really, we’re all so here for the Lord of the Rings one right now).
Are we getting an actual, solid Middle-earth-based title before The Elder Scrolls 6, then? Yes, it would appear so… and for once, I’m honestly not even mad about it. How could I be?
It seems that I’m not alone, either. “Considering that LotR makes a lot of lore-limits to magic, you’re the perfect studio for that production,” as one commenter says. “I hope it will be faithful to Tolkien’s creation.” Me too, anon, me too. Especially after the mess that was Gollum – a game I think we’d all rather just pretend doesn’t exist.
Other replies on the big Warhorse Studios reveal feature various GIFs from Peter Jackson’s films, of course.
