The Diablo 4 Seasonal and Eternal Realms have been part of the game since the first season launched back in the summer of 2023, however their role is about to change significantly. Previously you needed to create a fresh character for the start of every season, who would then be sent to the Eternal Realm once the event concluded, but from the Lord of Hatred expansion onward there will be more flexibility to this process. To get the lowdown, here’s everything you need to know about the Seasonal and Eternal Realms in Diablo 4 and how they’re changing.
Differences between the Seasonal and Eternal Realms in Diablo 4
When you start the Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred campaign you will be given a choice for your character, rather than being forced to create a new one on the Seasonal Realm. While you can still do that if you prefer, for the first time you may also select one of your existing characters from the Eternal Realm, and either pick up where you left off with them or jump straight to the beginning of the latest campaign.
If you create a new Seasonal Character then you’ll be starting completely fresh, meaning you can experiment with different builds and playstyle approaches, while continuing with your existing character on the Eternal Realm will let you iterate and refine your build over time. Playing on the Seasonal Realm will help to guide you towards new content through structured progression as you rebuild your inventory from scratch, while the Eternal Realm maintains a persistent environment where you make your own discoveries.
It’s worth noting that the Seasonal Realm is the only place where you can earn rewards through Seasonal Ranks, which includes exclusive cosmetics that won’t appear elsewhere. However, both Seasonal and Eternal Realms can access the Reliquary to unlock more cosmetic options.

Should you begin Lord of Hatred with a Seasonal or Eternal Realm character?
Whether you should begin Lord of Hatred with a Seasonal or Eternal Realm character depends on your previous experience in Diablo 4, and what your current aims are. If you’re looking for a fresh start, or you’re a completionist who wants to add all of the Seasonal rewards to their collection, then creating a new character on the Seasonal Realm is the way to go. However, if you’ve got a well-established character on the Eternal Realm and you want to invest in developing them further, then choose them for your next adventure.
Another important consideration is if you want to experience the game with friends, as you can’t play cooperatively across realms. If you’re planning to team up with others, then make sure that you all choose either the Seasonal or Eternal Realm, as otherwise you won’t be able to connect to each other.
