Facepunch, the development team behind smash-hit survival game Rust and the legendary Garry’s Mod, has given the world a detailed look at the finances behind its upcoming release s&box, revealing that the game development tool has made a profit for the first time in five years.
Labelled as the “spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod,” s&box is built on the Source 2 engine, and will allow players to build and create games inside of it, with community creations playing a huge role. S&box has been in development for five years, but according to Facepunch, April 2026 is the first time it’s turned a profit.
According to Facepunch, April has been a huge month for item sales specifically, with four days this month seeing the company recording over $100,000 in income from those alone. While this is great, Facepunch has a host of ongoing costs too, including spending on staff, servers, sales taxes, and fees to Valve and Steam (those are pretty hefty).
After turning losses for months on end, April 2026 has seen a profit of $298,400, built on a gross income of $1.1 million for the month. You can take a look at all of the financial records here.
In an X post about the records being released, Newman writes “I did this today, really happy with it.” The comments are largely all positive, with one saying that his transparency is “changing the industry for the better.”
Not only does s&box act as a successor to Garry’s Mod, but it’s also the foundation for a host of other games available on Steam. This includes popular titles like Prop Hunt, Mow the Lawn, Plinko Clicker, and many more.
