What are the best Dota 2 settings? In order to get the most out of Valve’s MOBA and ensure you have both a smooth and successful time in your matches, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve ticked all the right boxes first. Whether it’s setting up launch options to optimize the boot-up process and turn on handy features, or adjusting your controls so that you can quickly respond to events in-game with minimal misclicks or delay, we’ve rounded up everything you need to check.

Dota 2 is a competitive game first and foremost, and winning means getting every edge you can, which starts before you’ve even hit play. It can be as simple as making sure your game is running smoothly, no matter how comfortably you meet the Dota 2 system requirements. With roots all the way back in Warcraft 3 modding, Dota 2 remains one of the most intricately designed MOBAs, and while Valve’s sequel has a lot of modern polish, there are a colossal number of possible settings you can change. I’ve picked out the essentials that will make the biggest difference to your game, or those that you should consider adjusting before you start playing for the first time, and get used to your chosen setup.

    Best Dota 2 Settings

The Dota 2 Settings menu is an incredibly powerful tool, filled with a huge variety of ways to tweak and customize how you play and how the game reacts to certain situations. If you’re taking yourself seriously and really want to maximize your play, I’d recommend taking time to study the entire list – you can hover over each one and most will display a short tooltip explaining what it does. If you just want to get started, these are the settings that every player, at any skill level, needs to pay attention to.

    Hotkeys

    • Quickcast Abilities: Toggle this on and your abilities or items will use at the mouse cursor’s location immediately when you press the key, instead of requiring a left-click confirm. You can alternatively set it to activate when you release the key, and there’s even the option to enable quickcast on a per-item basis.
    • Direct Key Bindings: Toggle this on if you want to set separate keys for traditional casting, quickcasting, and autocasting (used for certain specific abilities that can trigger automatically when ready).

    Unit Orders

    • Auto Attack: Set to ‘Standard’ and you’ll attack nearby targets automatically unless you have just moved, denied a creep, or pressed the stop or hold key.
    • Right-Click Allies: Turn on ‘To Deny’ and you can right-click to attack your friendly units if they are in deny range, instead of needing to use a manual attack command.
    • Channels: You can set your teleport or channeled abilities to require a hold/cancel press to interrupt, stopping accidental cancels if you move. Useful if this happens to you often, but be aware that it’s bad for some heroes who like to use abilities while channeling (like Puck with Phase Shift).
    • Double-Tap to Self Cast: Turn this on and you can double-tap an ability or item to automatically use it on yourself, if possible.
    • Double-Tap Self Cast Timeout: Adjust this if you’re accidentally double-tapping when you don’t mean to, or conversely if you need more time to activate a double-tap command.
    • Disable Auto Attack When Stop is Held: Turn on if using ‘Standard’ auto attack and you can hold the stop key to avoid accidental moves. Essential for hiding from the enemy.

    Minimap

    • Icons: Use ‘Hero with Arrow’ for the most information possible.
    • Map Position: Due to Dota 2’s natural bottom-left to top-right design, moving your minimap to the right size can help avoid accidental misclicks.
    • Use Extra Large Minimap: Make your minimap slightly bigger. Recommended, and you can go even larger with the console command ‘dota_hud_extra_large_minimap 2’ if you want.
    • Minimap Hero Size: Don’t go too big on this. I use 108%, but anywhere between 100% and 130% is fine.
    • Minimap Misclick Protection Time: Turn this up to prevent accidental movement inputs on the minimap. Personally, I prefer using this at 0.3 seconds so I can leave the map on the left side.

Dota 2 options menu - Recommended minimap settings and how to change.

    Camera

    • Center Camera on Hero on Respawn: Turn this off so your camera isn’t dragged to your fountain when you respawn.
    • Disable Camera Zoom: Turn this off to avoid accidentally zooming in the heat of the moment. You can admire your fashion later.
    • Enable Screen Shake: Turn this off if you find the shaking effect from certain hero abilities to be distracting.

    Interface

    • Show Ability Rangefinder While Casting: Turn on for a ground-based range indicator to show how far spells can go.
    • Holding Alt Shows Neutral Spawnboxes: Turn this on so you can quickly check the area that must be occupied to block neutral camps from respawning.
    • Holding Alt Shows Tower Attack Range: Turn this on to quickly check where you’re in danger from enemy towers.

    Healthbars

    • Visualize Damage/Healing: Turn this off if you find the white effect displaying damage and healing effects to be distracting
    • Display Names Over Healthbar: Switch this to ‘Hero Names’ to more easily keep track of who you’re fighting. Great for new players, but also a safeguard against the more distracting skins.

    Miscellaneous

    • Strict Solo Role Queue Matchmaking: This will prevent you from being partied with or against any groups while queing for Ranked Roles games alone. Will result in longer matchmaking times.
    • Network Quality: Set to Low if you are running into frequent packet loss. Doing so will increase latency but improve smoothness.
    • Enable Console: Turn this on to enable use of the console.

How to set Dota 2 Launch Options

If you want to set specific options to activate whenever you boot up Dota 2, you can do so by right-clicking the game in your Steam library, and clicking ‘properties.’ You’ll see a text field to enter launch options under the ‘general’ tab, and can choose from the list below. Note that each option starts with a short dash symbol (-). If you want to enter multiple commands, they just need to be separated by a space.

    Best Dota 2 Launch Options

Below you’ll find a list of the most useful Dota 2 launch options. You can also check out our Dota 2 console commands guide for more ideas – these can also be activated on startup, but doing so will require placing a plus symbol (+) directly before them in place of the usual dash (-) used for the options listed below. Alternatively, you can use an Autoexec file – full details on doing this can be found in the console commands walkthrough that I’ve just linked to.

    • -autoconfig: Resets the graphics settings to your recommended hardware defaults. Think of this as an emergency option if you end up turning on something that your PC or monitor can’t display.
    • -console: Enables the use of the console. This can also be done through the settings menu, as seen below.
    • -fullscreen: Forces Dota 2 to run in fullscreen mode.
    • -high: Gives the game high CPU priority. This can be useful on slower machines, but be careful as it can cause some odd behaviors.
    • -map dota: Loads the map in the background when you start playing, saving you load time on your first match. Useful for slower computers.
    • -noborder: Forces Dota 2 to run in borderless windowed mode.
    • -nomicsettings: Stops Dota 2 adjusting your microphone values. Use if you find booting the game is affecting your settings for other third-party software such as Discord or OBS.
    • -noprewarm: Disables loading game resources on startup. Will get you into the menus faster, but at the cost of a longer load time for your first match.
    • -novid: Disables the intro video that plays on startup.
    • -safe_mode: Restores Dota 2 to the default rendering mode and ignores config files while this setting is active. Useful if you think you’ve activated something that’s not working as intended.
    • -useforcedmparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd: Stops Dota 2 from changing mouse acceleration and sensitivity settings, making it use the Windows defaults. You’ll want all three of these together.
    • -windowed: Forces Dota 2 to run in windowed mode.

That’s all I’ve got for you for now. As mentioned before, to become a true Dota master you’ll want to study the settings menu in full and take the time to experiment and find what suits you best. Be sure to brush up on your knowledge with our Dota 2 heroes guide, and learn what the current meta looks like, and you’ll be set for success.
