FF14 Fanfest will look more into the MMO's future than you might expect, director Naoki Yoshida teases

We’re expecting to learn what the FF14 8.0 expansion is called and some of the broad strokes of its plot direction at the upcoming NA Fan Festival in Anaheim, but game director Naoki Yoshida teases that players might be surprised by some of the reveals during his keynote. The upcoming FF14 Fanfest will give our first look at the next expansion, which we expect to arrive in late 2026 if we’re lucky, or more likely early 2027. With the showcase preceding the launch of the next story patch, however, ‘Yoshi-P’ thinks he might catch the audience off guard.

Speaking to Famitsu, Yoshida digs into the upcoming Fanfest event on April 24-25, along with discussions about the contents of Final Fantasy 14 patch 7.5, which drops just days after the festival on Tuesday April 28. It’s going to be a particularly long stretch between that update and the launch of the MMORPG’s next expansion, no matter where it falls, but Yoshida believes the team’s range of new inclusions will be enough to keep players busy in the interim. Please note that all quotes in this story have been machine-translated from Japanese.

Yoshida says he hopes the audience can enjoy the live event and the new patch content in parallel with each other. He suggests that the NA keynote will act as “part zero of the patch 7.5 main quest,” with the update itself acting as “part one,” the Fanfest Europe keynote as “part 1.5,” and the conclusion of the MSQ in patch 7.56 being “part two.” He comments on the real-world and in-game aspects being interconnected: “After that, we’ll dive into the media tour, and I imagine both the development team and the media will be facing a hellish schedule,” he concludes with a wry smile.

Yoshida says he wants to give this round of Fan Festival keynotes “a slightly different vibe than usual,” explaining: “I plan to talk a bit more about the future of FF14 and delve deeper into what’s to come. In particular, the keynote at the North American Fan Festival will include some information that might make people think, ‘You’re revealing this even though patch 7.5 hasn’t been released yet?'”

He adds, “Regardless of the expansion pack, I plan to reveal everything we’re planning for the future of FF14 all at once. Then, at the Fan Festivals in Europe and beyond, we’ll delve deeper into those details.” It certainly sounds like a bit more than a general tone piece. “We also plan to announce even bigger storylines and systems,” Yoshida continues. “We intend to fully meet 100% of what you all expect from a typical Fan Festival, but please know that there will be more than just that.”

Not everything will be broken down in full detail, of course. “The amount of information for the keynote alone would be overwhelming,” Yoshida admits with a smile, “trying to cover everything there would take about five hours.” Given that the schedule only allows him two, including the time spent on live English translations, he intends to “vary the depth, delving into certain elements in detail and sharing only concepts for others, with more in-depth explanations to follow in Europe and Japan.”

We could even be in for some early gameplay demos. While they wouldn’t fit into the keynote, Yoshida intends to incorporate live demonstrations into the development panel that takes place later on day one. “Since it’s still in active development, with the UI currently in debug mode and all, it’ll be much rougher around the edges than our previous live demos,” he laughs, “but seeing something in motion makes it easier to visualize, and since this is Fanfest, we’re going to share as much as we possibly can.”

Yoshida muses on the concept of MMORPGs as “a game where you ‘play now while looking forward to the future.'” He hopes that players will have that experience in the wake of Fanfest, “with your expectations raised as high as possible.” He even drops a particularly curious thought: “By the way, while we’re announcing things for the distant future, there might be some elements that make you think, ‘Does this mean this is going away?'”

Quite what he’s referring to there remains to be seen, but Yoshida says “calling it ‘A Realm Reborn’ is a bit of a stretch,” as that involved a complete rebuild from the client up. “Though there might be some similarities in nuance,” he ponders. With a gradual rollout from patch 7.51 onwards of the new ultimate raid, Beastmaster limited job, Cosmic Exploration, Hildibrand, and more, he hopes players can continue to “enjoy the present while looking forward to the future.”

Across the rest of the interview with Famitsu, Yoshida talks more about that upcoming patch 7.5 content. He confirms that the Beastmaster should mostly be thought of as “a limited job designed for solo play,” although notes that you can still form parties with it while gathering your roster of creatures, or to tackle existing content together if you wish. “It’s up to you, please feel free to play however you like.”

Yoshida also touches on the upcoming ultimate raid, stating that he isn’t holding off on revealing it because of any delays, but simply because he wishes to reveal it in a more grand fashion on the Fanfest stage alongside “a bit of the actual gameplay.” Finally, he addresses the fact that the Occult Crescent’s existing Forked Tower: Blood doesn’t have an easier mode to match the one that we’re getting for the upcoming Forked Tower: Magic.

“I think it’s a good idea to train your characters in North Horn [the new region coming as part of the patch 7.5 cycle] and then try the Tower again,” he suggests. “However, if clearing it remains difficult or gathering enough players is a challenge, we may make adjustments in the future based on your feedback and data regarding content entry and clear rates.”

FF14 Fanfest North America takes place in Anaheim on Friday April 24 and Saturday April 25. We’ll be bringing you the latest news direct from the show floor, and it’ll also be available to watch live on the official FF14 YouTube and Twitch channels.
