League of Legends ranked guide – LoL ranks, distribution, and MMR

What are the LoL ranks? Sure, you can kill time playing normals or ARAMs in Riot’s MOBA, but there’s only one real way to challenge yourself: ranked. Unlocked at player level 30, ranked matches pit you against Summoners of a similar skill level, with each match being a true test of your prowess. Every player is assigned a specific rank, with wins seeing you gain LP and rise through the ranks.

The ranked system itself, however, has its complexities. There are various tiers within the MOBA game, each featuring unique subdivisions; there’s the LP system and then MMR, which you have no doubt heard every League of Legends player moan about at some point. While the pros sit high in their Challenger castles, most non-Immortal Demon Kings sit across the lower tiers, generally ending up in either Silver or Gold, dreaming of being Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok.

Every LoL rank explained

There are ten different ranks in League of Legends, beginning with Iron and ending with Challenger. Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger all fall into the distinct Apex ranks category, reserved for the best of the best.

Here is every League of Legends rank, from lowest to highest:

• Iron
• Bronze
• Silver
• Gold
• Platinum
• Emerald
• Diamond
• Master
• Grandmaster
• Challenger

Each rank from Iron to Diamond is split into four divisions, so if you want to climb from Platinum to Emerald, for example, you need to progress through Platinum I through IV before reaching the new overall Emerald rank.

When is the next League of Legends ranked season?

The new League of Legends Ranked Season begins with patch 26.09, which drops on Wednesday, April 29. The season will tick over at 12pm local time, with your Season 1 reward being awarded on the same day. You’ll receive the Victorious Braum skin if you’ve won 15 ranked games.

How to gain LoL rank (LP)

Each time you win a ranked match in League of Legends, you’re awarded League Points (LP). If you reach 100 LP in your current division, you’ll move up a rank. For example, if you are on 90 LP in the Silver I division and win your next game, you’ll be awarded enough points to move up to Gold rank.

Be warned, though; this works both ways. If you lose a ranked game, you’ll lose LP, and if you fall below the zero LP threshold, you’ll be demoted from whichever division you were in before. Similarly, if you’re in the Apex tier ranks (Diamond through Challenger), you’ll have to watch out for rank decay. This system monitors how often you play games and will begin to eat away at your LP if you don’t engage frequently enough.

LP works slightly differently for autofilled players, though. New for 2026, Riot confirmed that autofilled players will receive an Aegis of Valor, which rewards either double LP for a win or full protection from LP loss if you score a C or higher. This is due to the role that autofill plays in the wider ecosystem, effectively keeping queues manageable for other role-dedicated players. Similarly, Riot has taken aim at queue dodging this year, with a dodge counting as a full loss, and you’ll still get hit with the usual timer.

Current LoL rank distribution

The entire League of Legends ranked player base sits in this system, and traditionally, it has been quite bottom-heavy. Coming into 2026, Riot is aware of this and acknowledges that previous iterations of the ranked system haven’t quite reflected the skills of the modern player base. As a result, it’s made some tweaks to ensure that your true rank is better represented, leading to more players landing in Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

What is LoL MMR?

As you play ranked, you’re assigned a hidden number calculated from your wins, losses, and in-game performance – this is known as your Matchmaking Ranking, or MMR. You’re then pitted against other players with a similar MMR.

MMR remains controversial in League of Legends and will forever be a talking point. Often players feel like they’ve been wrongly assessed (or dumped in the ‘Loser’s Queue’), and that’s what the aforementioned ranked distribution changes are actively targeting.

In a developer blog published on March 2, 2026, lead gameplay designer Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison says Riot has “seen a lot of success in this change,” but at the lower end of the spectrum it hasn’t been enough to “distinguish between these skill levels.” As a result, “there may be a need for an entirely new rank below Iron in the future.”

At the upper end of the spectrum, Phroxzon notes that climbing through Diamond has been “painful,” so Riot has chosen to “re-assign the MMR-to-Rank distribution to put players at the higher end of Diamond into Master.” Phroxzon closes out his statement by saying, “We’re keeping an eye on this and think that a potential follow-up is that we may also need a bit of expansion at Apex tiers, given that there’s now more of a difference between a zero LP Master player and a 900 LP Master player.”
