Metro 2033 author and collaborator on the video game series, Dmitry Glukhovsky, is saying the next entry, Metro 2039, will be the darkest in the series to date.

Earlier this week – after a weekend packed with rumors and leaks – Microsoft announced a new Xbox Showcase, but rather than an all-encompassing show, this one has a single purpose: to reveal the next game in the Metro series. While details about the game are slim, Glukhovsky has posted about the announcement, reiterating his involvement in the title, which was first announced back in 2020 as an unnamed sequel to Metro Exodus.

I’m sure it will be if I turn the brightness all the way down.April 14, 2026

Well, after Microsoft gave us nothing, over on Twitter, Glukhovsky, out of the blue, posted another detail about the game, saying, “This Metro game will be darker than anything you’ve seen before.” Of course, I assume he’s talking about the actual content of the game and the story he’s presumably worked on for it, but given the Metro series focuses on underground tunnels, some are taking this quite literally, wondering if the game itself will be hard to see.

We’ll likely find out more about what the storyline actually is after the reveal later this week, but it’s safe to say the already pretty grim series could be facing some more nasty business. Although, granted, I think it would be a pretty safe assumption that a post-apocalypse is only going to get worse as it goes along, but Glukhovsky’s comment could signal an even sharper tone shift than some could be expecting.

Fallout: New Vegas praise felt “a little unfair” to one Bethesda veteran at first, but Obsidian “did a great job” of channeling the series’ spirit: “In some ways better than we did.”
