A24 has unveiled a creepy new teaser for upcoming horror movie Backrooms, and it’ll make you never want to watch TV again.
Well, to be fair, the ad itself isn’t all that scary; as it sees Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character Clark dress up as a pirate to promote a store called Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire. What’s eerie, though, is that if you ring ‘(408)-357-2875’, the phone number featured in the spot, you’ll find yourself listening to a bunch of static noises and a weird voice telling you that the receiver is based in California. “The only thing you’ll be wanting…” Ejiofor’s character says gruffly to the camera, “is more space to keep it all.” I don’t think space is going to be a problem for anyone who dares enter that shop…

Based on director Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube series, the distributor is keeping Backrooms’ plot a mystery for now, with the film’s official synopsis cryptically reading: “A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.”
In the original video, a then-16-year-old Parsons played a cameraman who slips over during a shoot and later awakens in a monster-filled, yellow-wallpapered labyrinth-like dimension. Across the 22 shorts that followed, it’s established that a research team named Async is studying the alternate reality.
Ejiofor will be joined onscreen by Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennett (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), and Avan Jogia (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City).
