Robert Kirkman has offered a promising update on the live-action Invincible movie, almost a decade on from it being first announced.
“It’s definitely a long process, and it’s something that hopefully will come together sooner rather than later,” Kirkman told ScreenRant, noting that the team’s “focus right now” is the ongoing TV series. “There’s certainly movement here and there behind the scenes, but nothing that we can reveal just yet.”
Having premiered back in 2021, the Invincible TV show centers on 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), as he’s taught how to be a superhero by the most powerful one on the planet, his father Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Before long, though, Mark realizes that juggling a personal life and saving the world is much harder than his morally ambiguous pops makes it look.
Four years earlier than its first episode, it was reported that executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg had plans to turn the graphic novels in which it’s based into a big-screen adventure for Universal Pictures. But little has been heard on the project since. In the years that followed, Yeun has expressed doubt on whether or not he could convincingly play a teenager in a live-action take, while 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple helmer Nia DaCosta has expressed interest in directing a non-animated feature.
“The comic and cartoon are amazing,” the filmmaker wrote in a recent Reddit Q&A. “I know exactly how I’d want to translate that world, and that amazing father/son relationship, to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera – and sex!”
