5. Marvel’s Wolverine
Insomniac Games showed a great deal of uninterrupted Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay, which made the game seem much more cinematic and sequential – in short, closer to an MCU film – than Marvel’s Spider-Man. We saw Wolverine fight through hordes of henchmen to rescue a shipping container full of young mutants, with suitably gory third-person combat segueing into a playable motorcycle chase.
Besides showcasing the game’s combat and tighter action focus, Sony also announced that pre-orders for Marvel’s Wolverine are now live. The game’s September 15 release date is still on track – and if you’re keen to see which mutants are going to be in the game, here are all the familiar faces my colleague spotted.
4. Kemuri
Legendary artist Ikumi Nakamura (Okami, Bayonetta, The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo) is taking the reins as director for Kemuri, an incredibly stylish-looking “yokai hunting” multiplayer game which sets players loose to hunt supernatural targets across Kemuri City. Kemuri’s wild verticality catches the eye: we saw players bounding up skyscrapers while locked in combat with yokai; with fights flowing naturally from the ground to rooftops and back.
Knowing the extent of Nakamura’s credits – I’m very keen to see more. There’s a real focus on artistry here, with Kemuri’s website boasting the game is “born from the collision of different cultures, values, instincts, and creative visions” of its developers. And, seeing as it’s a multiplayer game, expect to see this land on PC despite Sony’s recent doubling-down on PS5 exclusivity.
3. Until Dawn 2
Here’s another surprise: Until Dawn 2 exists and is coming in 2027, albeit from developer Firesprite rather than original creator Supermassive Games. With the first game’s Dr. Hill (played by Peter Stormare) returning, the horror sequel will follow a film crew of ghost hunters who have faked everything in their career and get a taste of reality on an abandoned tropical island.
Until Dawn 2’s debut trailer is a gory eyeful, with one castmate having their legs cut off and another splattering upon a rocky shore in unflinching Midsommar-style focus. But it’s not all doom and gloom, Baldur’s Gate 3 star Neil Newbon appears to play quite a big role. With the trailer signing off with “everyone can live / everyone can die,” I for one cannot wait to see the lengths Baldur’s Gate 3 fans will go to in keeping Newbon’s character alive.
2. Stuntman: Hollywood
Having gotten a taste for cinematic car chases in 007 First Light, Stuntman: Hollywood’s surprise reveal is well-received indeed. The revived series, now under the care of Saber Interactive, is being made alongside Universal and NBC; and will feature plenty of the distributor’s most recognizable sets. Think Fast & Furious, Miami Vice, Back to the Future, Knight Rider – they’re all here!
With more information shared on PlayStation’s blog, Stuntman: Hollywood seems to be a throwback to the PS1/PS2-era driving games – drawing chiefly from Stuntman itself, but “Burnout and Split/Second” also serving as “especially important touchstones” for the developer. Say less!
1. God of War Laufey
As one last surprise, Sony revealed God of War Laufey, which picks up with Kratos cremating his partner, Laufey, from the 2018 game. But it doesn’t look like Kratos will be the star of this show: as the title suggests, we follow Laufey’s spirit into the stars and see her wake up in a strange afterlife; her memories of dying intact. The land has been overtaken by carnivorous plants, leaving Faye to fight with her own style of third-person combat – relying on a sword, magical abilities, and keeping enemies chained off their feet using aerial attacks.
While we saw roughly 15 minutes of gameplay, there was no release date – though it does seem to be quite far ahead at Sony Santa Monica. Its visuals and action already seem like easy sells for God of War fans, but how will we fare away from Kratos? It’s early days, but from what we’ve seen so far, that doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a problem.
